Anyone done Lands End to John O'Groats within one day?
Whats the best route, and how many hours did it take?

Nup. I did Elgin to Penzance in a 7 1/2 tonner many years ago though. Dunno what your additional distance would be but I guess it's feasible.

We stopped for a few days near Penzance last summer and the drive home to Preston took about 6 hours I think via A30, M5 and M6. The drive from Preston to JOG would probably take another 6 hours or so as a friend has driven down to here from Thurso in that sort of time. I'm not sure of his speed/route other than the obvious M6 and M74 then probably round Glasgow on the M8 past the airport and over the old bridge before Loch Lomond and Glencoe (nice bit of road)and through Fort William and on past Loch Ness and Inverness then I suspect the A9 north (being careful of cameras, etc. for a while) to JOG.
Overall time is therefore at least 12/13 hours but as with all trips it is dependent on what time you hit Birmingham, road works with the now almost mandatory 50 limits (even when no-one working) and the need to have some breaks.
Based on the above it would certainly be possible providing the setoff time was carefully selected and you would be quite shattered when you arrived so some rest stops would be needed.

I think possible but dull.

Aim for 48 hours with no motorways to make it interesting.

And remember to look out Petrol stations that supply Super Unleaded, as you may start to run short in the more northerly areas. Or possibly stock up on Octane booster.

me thinks should be able to do it in 15 hours, early start late finish. Coming back thru Scotland should be a hoot- will a sheep fit in the boot? - anyone had any experience? Will Whisky be suitable replacement for Super Unleaded

Whats dull about a 15 hour Saturday blast in a Griff, followed by a couple of days scratching round some of the best roads in Europe- the Highlands.

LPG fair enough but alot of petrol stations up there don't sell Super Unleaded?,I guess it's something we take for granted a bit in the home counties.

I've been round much of northern Scotland and provided you do fill up with the good stuff when you can there is a supply - eg Thurso has 2 garages that I know of (Shell and Esso) which do super unleaded - so you need to fill up round Inverness and then top up at the northern coast in Thurso. The Mways are a bit of a pain though as they are the most expensive by far so may need to check where you can fill up just off the Mway. The run up from Glasgow via Loch Lomond shouldn't be too bad as long as you fill up before Loch Lomond and also super is available on the way N out of Fort William (Can't remember which but could be Shell/BP/Esso).
