After the run out at the weekend I noticed the exhaust sounded a bit louder than normal. On further investigation I have found than one of the pipes has broken clean off about level with half way along the door, just before the the center boxes. Also noticed that one of the boxes was glowing red hot after only a couple of miles, is this normal. Is it safe to drive with the busted exhaust as Peninsular cant look at it until the 26th, the pipes are not fouling anything.

Ask yourself this, If one of the boxes was glowing red hot after being subjected to hot exhaust gas blown over it after only a few miles, how hot is the fibreglass floor of your car going to be?

If you want to drive it, make sure the fire brigade are following you. From your post, I would say you have been extrememy lucky and you'd be very foolish to drive it until it's repaired.

I dont think any of the exhaust system should be 'glowing red hot'....very hot yes..but not 'glowing red hot'!
I think you should get it checked out first...but at the end of the day its not my car!

Sounds like a Lambda sensor problem to me - Don't drive it!

Talk to an expert on the phone and or flatbed it to them ASAP.

Normally you have hot exhaust gas passing through the pipe to the rear of the car, but in this instance it's exiting somewhere where it shouldn't and getting the wrong things hot. Gas passing down the pipe is contained within it and the pipe surface gets hot only. In this instance everything in the area is getting a dose of hot air.

Imagine one of those space heater things, if it was blowing from a room through a door to outside, you'd expect the room to get warmer because of the heat generated from the heater, most of the heat will be going out of the door though. Now place the heater entirely within the room and it gets a lot hotter, even with the door still open. Get my point?

Of course it'll get hot! It's why there is heat resistant material above the exhaust.

Cat's don't operate correctly until they are at 800°C anyway. When calibrating the new MINI I had the entire exhaust system glowing red hot! Front to back. On a lean over-run condition you could see temps well over 1000°C.

Saying that, the exhaust gas is not designed to exit in that area and hence I wouldn't drive it as you could well cause a fire.

Won;t be a lambda issue as that only operates in closed loop conditions and you'll never see exhaust temps like that in closed loop.

Were your cats glowing? If so, one of them be blocked. Straight through pipes (you know it makes sense).

Knowing the AA, they will send out Joe Spanner first
of all to tell you he can't fix it.

Then they will order the recovery truck.

Simply call them and they will set the process going.

Good luck.

Sorry, you will need a recovery vehicle - NOT a suspended tow or rigid bar tow!

Peninsular TVR came and picked it up, fixed the exhaust problem, went to pick it up today and the starter motor spins but does not engage, only a salesman there so had to leave it. Any ideas ?
