its quite scary

the S1 seems to have suddenely dropped off the radar

happens to all cars good eventually

find me a good low-ish miles, nice looking 111s, sport 160 or 135 sport ? They don't exist !

Its like 964 turbos, 993 C2's, 968cs's etc... suddenely all you see in teh classifieds are old dogs

Pure Lotus seem to have cornered the S1 market looking at the classified.

I shall be selling my 111S soonish it seems. It's in silver, has Nitrons and 73k miles which is quite low for an 11 year old light car wink

If my house move comes off this week then, begrudgingly, there could be a nice completely standard black S160 with less than 20k miles on the clock coming to the market.

Please give me a shout if you know anyone who is feeling charitable, willing to offer a shoulder to cry on or who would let me visit the car after we part company.

I've been looking at 964 C2s thinking the same thing - a manual C2 coupe in a nice colour doesn't seem to come up that often.

i think decent 964 c2's dropped off the radar a while ago now

and funnily enough its happened already for 993's .. try and find a manual Varioram C2 with <100k miles. Out of 81 used 993's the other day in the classifieds i couldnt find one. All cabrios, tiptronics and 4x4's

S1 shortage a lot to do with it being mentioned as a future classic methinks. I agree that it will be but between then and now the hangers on will be in for some hefty bills.

I still miss mine but still remember the roof mechanism going belly up and had it not been under warranty would have cost £900..for a piece of fabric.

Would love another but not sure I'd pay a premium over an S2.

You can get a brand new soft top from elise parts for something like £400

Sounds more like it. Begs the question what could possibly fail to cost more than twice that? Bracket on the rear clam where it clips in? Or just main dealer mark up?

Bracket was goosed also I think but it was main dealer price.

I have a rather nice mustard yellow 1999 S1 with 4900 miles on the clock smile, it's like brand new.

Mine (a '99) has done 4,000. I bought it with zero miles on it a couple of years ago. The original owner had a collection of Lotuses in a warehouse, and all he did was look at them. The story I got was that he flogged the lot and replaced them with a collection of Aston Martins. Given that it's minty, I try not to use it too much. But the point is that there are still some good cars out there, if you look hard enough, and wait long enough.

Good car doesn't necessarily equal low milage in my book. Extreme examples like your present the dilemma of as soon as you drive it you start knocking value off it hand over fist, as you seem to recognise. Fair enough if you're happy with that but only driving it 2k a year would seriously frustrate me! Just seems like a huge waste.

Well, I'd be frustrated if it was the only car I had access to. But it isn't. I've got two others to choose from, and TBH I get a kick out of driving anything. If I want sheer undiluted adrenalin thrills, then I have a couple of bikes too. The Elise is quick but it won't do 0-100 MPH in under six seconds, and it won't do 170 either. But I really enjoy driving it, and at a couple of thousand or three miles per year, it just makes me appreciate it more.
