Which Antivirus Freeware

What software do you guys and gals recommend?

AVG Free.

The IT man who comes now and then to our Dealership also suggested this when I was checking with him what he uses.

We use AVG here, but the pay for version.

I've heard good things about (*shock* *horror*) Microsoft Security Essentials. High detection rate, low footprint, simple GUI, well integrated, does the job.

use avast home edition mate, its free, you just re-register each year, it works under w7 and has lots of parts to protect you on the net, email etc.

avg is good, but it can be a pain to get rid of if you ever need to.

i use it on all my boxes at home and we are clean 3 years in with teenage boys in the house

in fact i used it on a mates work machine and it got rid of something that macafee hadn't even seen.

I had AVG for a while, it was abysmal at times, could suck a lot of resources. No problems at all since I installed the MSE.

Another for MSE here, does its job and doesn't use many system resources. one of those "you dont know its there till you need it" programs, which are the best kind

Yeah AVG is getting a bit long in the tooth now.
Go with MSE.

Go with AVAST. Avg unfortunately has become a bit of a resource hog in the last 2 years.

I use Avira. It has a popup asking you to upgrade to the commercial version but you can stop that by changing the security level of avnotify.exe. I've never used MSE but one thing that would make me wary is that the most popular software is the most likely to have malicious code written specifically for it.

Thanks for everyones comments, gone with MSE.

I'm not going to be doing anything dodgy, downloading porn etc, etc so MSE will do for me.

might switch from AVG to MSE on the strenght of this thread. AVG scans cause MASSIVE loading lag.

Yes, I was going to say the same thing.

AVG does make the computer run slow, usually exit it when I want to use the computer (Not often!)

Another Avast! user here. After years of struggling with McAfeee and Norton, an IT guy at work recommended Avast! and I haven't looked back since. Unintrusive, free, and clean computer since having it
