Doesn't seem unreasonable, really. They have an ancient Nokia 3210 on record and then you tell them you've lost your iPhone? How is that different to calling your car insurance company and saying "no, not a Rover 25, it's a Bugatti Veyron".
This.Seems like common sense to me

Its not always the case if its from house insurance though. I claimed for a lost iPhone and I had never told them about it. They only proof they needed was the crime ref/blocked imei and oddly a photo of the box as there is no way of determining which version of the iPhone it is from the imei (apparently).
Also warn her to be carefull, if she registers her new iPhone now she's got to make sure that she doesn't "lose" it within 30 days if you get my drift, as apparently if you register it and lose it the next day it looks suspect so they've put a 30 day clause in as it's obviously no at all suspicious if you lose it on day 31!
Same if you have to replace the phone with the same type - IMEI number is what they will need.
I've done it twice for MOH in the past 4 months as he had a replacement phone (previous one cracked - not his fault), then the replacement turned out to be faulty so he got another.
Then a couple of weeks ago we got broken into and the phones were nicked - we have made a claim and the insurance company wants proof of purchase of the phone that was nicked! Cue several copies of shipment manifests to prove change in phones from original purchase invoice to one we were actually claiming for.

Yep, I have the package of things with a Barclays account including phone insurance. It's not even small print, it's quite clear on an A4 sheet giving specifics of the deal that you have to register the make & model. If your contents insurance has a section called 'Personal Belongings' or similar, then, provided that the sum insured is sufficient, your mobile phone may well be covered. Insurance this way is MUCH cheaper than special 'mobile phone' insurance.
As ever with insurance - NOT ALL COMPANIES ARE THE SAME. Read your own policy, ask your own insurance company for the details.

We have cover with out NatWest gold accounts, along with car breakdown cover etc..
Best thing is to call them for specifics as we had to register our individual phones along with all the necessary numbers online with them, yet car cover is automatic as long as the car is registered in your name at the home address. Plus with the phone, even once registered, you couldnt make a claim for a month.
Luckily for me the cover would just replace my N900 if it got damaged......
