500 miles on the motorway last Friday has convinced me that I should look at a higher ratio transfer box for my TD5 110. Has anyone got any experience with the Ashcroft 1:1.222 conversion?

massive bump here, I'm looking at a reconditioned box as i'm sick of the slack in the transmission. Tempted to pay the bit extra for the disco ratio's as well

ok as long as you have standard sized tyres or dont do heavy towing if you do an over drive is a better bet

Personally I really struggle with the idea of changing the ratio. Main reason as it'll blunt performance more than anything.

Also interestingly, if you run a Defender on the larger optional tyres and an early Disco on their standard tyres (which are much smaller), the mph per 1000rpm is almost identical.

I'd recommend either running 5mph slower or look into an OD unit instead. Or maybe just some taller tyres.

Also depending on what tyres you run now and what engine and if tuned. Over gearing might make it struggle more and force you to drop gears on the motorway to get up hills.

Also means 5th might be useless unless at higher speeds.

For example, in my modded Disco Tdi with 33"+ tyres on, 5th is useless unless I'm going over 50mph. Compared to my uncles stock 2.5 TD 90 on mud terrains (235/85's) which will pull 5th at about 35mph +-

I may leave the ratio as is and just get a reconditioned box. though once I get the shunt sorted i'm going to get a stage 1 tune done on the ecu
