Hi all it appears that my boiler (not a combi) is giving me hot water but no heating. Have farted about with the thermostat and heating pump but boiler doesn't seem interested.

Any ideas or is it time to get a man in?

might be one of the zone valves that has packed up that allows hot water into the heating circuit. If it is, it's a simple change, no draining required. You can see if it's gone by watching it open if it's working or not moving at all if it's failed when the heating is switched on.

The zone valve looks like this: http://www.buyaparcel.com/pageview.php?page=show_p...

Motorised three way valve, should be near the tank. It will have an override lever on the side. That might free it up, sometimes a tap on the casing will free it up. Otherwise a simple job for a plumber.

Cheers chaps. I have one of those but since posting this I've done some more investigating and I don't think the boiler is doing anything. There is hot water from the taps but I'm wondering if that is just residual heat as my girlfriend left the immersion heater on last night for a while. Haven't seen the boiler show any sign of life yet, other than the pilot light. Does that put a new slant on things?

sure the thermostat is turned high enough to start the boiler? Sure the timer is in the ON position? Boiler isn't "locked out" is it?

Changing a zone valve DOES require draining normally, unless you can get away with bunging off the header tank to stop the water coming out.

When everything is calling for heat check for a switched live on the boiler. If it's there it's the boiler, if it isn't it's the system.

Right, a further development, the heating came on this morning on the timer as usual but the flat is not getting very hot so it looks like the thermostat isn't working for some reason. I guess these aren't too tricky to change?

Could be a number of things. Is the pump getting heat away from the boiler? Is the system full of water?
