We have a toilet. It's really hard to flush. I'm not technical regarding the operation of loos, so would appreciate any bog-help from the PH massive. It requires multiple 'pumps' of the handle in succession to get the flush to operate... it sounds like you're trying to do a desperate second flush even if you've only been for a minuscule 'preventative pee'. Any advice? I have opened up the big-tank-thing at the top and nothing is obviously wrong or obviously adjustable.

Can anyone help us out to remedy this disturbing issue?

jobswill,

this could be the part you require:
http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detai...

in my situation it was the plastic membrane from inside the syphon tube which was torn. i was able to construct a temporary replacement using the bottom of a bacon packet to stop anything from trying to crawl back out! This tided me over for a few weeks until until i made it to b and q.

first you have to disconnect the toilet handle from the centre syphon tube(this will be a metal linkage which is connected to the plastic of the handle inside the cistern. make a note of which hole the link is connected to and reconnect to same later)

you then should be able to remove the syphon by unscrewing the plastic nut at the bottom the cistern (inside).

(ignore the fact that this is a conversion kit. The picture is for reference only. The plastic membrane is located inside the white plastic contraption with the blue lid. This whole part needs to be removed)
You will have to get your hands wet to do this….
If you get the right nut there no water will escape from the cistern…..

Disclaimer:
There are other types of flushing mechanisms. This is how my one works….

You certainly need a diaphragm, I reckon, but they aren't easy to change if you have a close-coupled toilet. You will PROBABLY need to take the cistern off the pan to do it. Disturbing the join between the two will PROBABLY require a new seal there too.

How about changing the cistern for one of those nice modern air-push ones? At least then you can flush the bog without pretending to kick-start a motorbike!

Excellent thanks all. I am looking forward to getting home tonight and having a little bog-play!
