Alcohol vs Drugs

With today's calls for mephedrone to be made illegal due to 2 deaths allegedly linked to this drug, why haven't they outlawed alcohol with its 9 thousand+ related deaths per year? Surely, people must accept responsibility for their own actions when taking drugs or drinking alcohol. Or smoking? Or driving a big lump of metal at breakneck speeds?
Why don't they ban cars? They cause thousands of serious injuries and deaths every year. Nearly as many as hospitals.
Joking aside, there's a difference of what is considered socially acceptable- it's not just a question of what is technically better or worse for someone's health. Alcohol has been a part of life for thousands of years, as has smoking. An outright ban when such a high percentage of the population partake in something is not always going to work.

as have a lot of other substancesIn the Western World a huge percentage of the population take alcohol and the effects on society in the main are not that ill compared to the effects of other drugs. For every scene of lairy saturday nights watching neanderthals fighting in A+E departments, there are millions of people having a social drink at home or otherwise causing no problem whatsoever.
Attacks on alcohol use are often by people who like another, illegal substance that's in the spotlight, who feel aggrieved that their pasttime is being picked on unjustly.

undoubtedly sojust appears odd that just because it's become a 'social norm' it's accepted with the effects getting swept under the carpet so other substances can be targeted through misinformation and ignorance
How dare you think people should be allowed to think for themselves and make their own judgement on things.
If certain drugs were to be legalised for recreational use then there would be standards that had to be maintained, there would be no deaths from dodgy drugs. Only through drug abuse and their effects on the body will they occur. Same as alcohol, less than tobacco possibly.
It also would be a huge tax earning. Think of how much tax is made on alcohol and to a lesser extent cigarettes. If you could add one of the largest industries in the world that would cut the deficit.
However no government would ever do that, due to the social stigma that has been created over the 20th century it would be political suicide.
I don't see much difference between alcohol and drugs, same family of recreation enjoyment.
