Tell me about the FTO
Discussion
I heard an FTO zip past me today and it sounded very nice. Naturally this got me curious.
Do the tiptronics zap a lot of power? I've seen the quoted 0-60 as slow as 9.2 seconds in some places and around 8 seconds for the MIVEC. This does seem a little lacklustre in comparison to to other cars in a similair power bracket.
I've been told that the best buy is the Manual GR as it is quicker/cheaper to insure than a Tiptronic Mivec. Is there any truth to this?

Insurance is sky high, especially when you consider the performance. Before I bought the Scoob I ran a couple of quotes and they were higher than Evo's and the like so I'd definately get a quote or 2 before you look into it any further.
Don't know what they're like but I think the tip is to be avoided from what I've head which isn't a lot. They do sound pretty nice though

I have had a manual MIVEC one of these for 10 years and I agree they are fantastic cars. For a car that could be anything between ten and sixteen years old they still hold their own against much newer mid-size coupes in the looks department (even those that have had 'tasteful' exterior modifications!) and performance-wise they are adequate although not as powerful as maybe they should have come from the factory, but from a N/A engine performance is pretty good. You need to learn how to drive using high revs where the power is. As the OP said, the sound of the 2.0 litre V6 screaming in the MIVEC zone up to over 8000 RPM is addictive. They are also now cheap and easy to buy, insure and maintain.
EDITED: Yeah they are FWD but they are one of the best handling FWD cars ever made, similar chracteristics as the Integra Tyre R (and that car is well known for its good FWD handling). They are often complained about for being a hard ride, but it IS a sports car after all. This already good handling can be easliy improved with many aftermarket add ons.
EDITED X2: http://www.pistonheads.com/GASSING/topic.asp?h=0&a... A fairly accurate write-up from another FTO owner.

That'd be me..Mine is the 5 speed manual GPX Mivec. It's adequately fast, but not really a sports car. The insurance is steep at almost £800 (£250 more than my MR2 Turbo was) but nowhere near as much as my Impreza was (last quote £1,400!!!). The Scooby and the '2 were virtually standard, the FTO has tinted windows, wheels, exhaust induction and suspension.
I get 30mpg easily.
It is a tidy handler but not mind-blowing. Corners relatively flat with minimal roll, capable of quite lairy lift-off oversteer (which I discovered because the actual grip is WAY lower than I was expecting). It's wearing Toyos but can't seem to corner at the same speed my MR2 could on Nankang-ditchfinders. I do wonder if the geo setup is out.
Overall - I did test drive some Celicas/Hondas and I prefer the FTO by miles, both to look at and to drive. Wins on noise by default of course. That V6 really can sing.
I'd say own one if you just want a road car and have the cash spare. It'll make you smile when you drive it and when you walk up to it. If you want a track capable car buy something else..

I looked into these. The Mivec is the 200bhp 2.0 V6, available in semi Auto and manual. The Manual makes best sense as its 10mph faster and a second quicker to 60.Do the tiptronics zap a lot of power? Your right about condition, a lot of chavved up s
t out there. They are cheap, but Manuals tend to fetch more than the tiptronic.
Ive only ever driven a GPr Version R which was manual, and as far as I can make out its a lighter version of the GPX with blue seats. It was good, but it was £11000 when I drove it back in 2003, and even then it was expensive for what it was. I bought a rev3 MR2 Turbo T bar for half that, even that had its faults though.
Keep looking, they do come up, but prices are all over, from £1500 to £4000. I would guess a good one will be about £2500. Thats the kind of price you could import one yourself for now.
