Something from the "religious have mental deficiencies" thread got me thinking.
If religion wasn't there to scare monger people into thinking that if they do wrong they will go to hell, would people be scared of death?
I for one am an Atheist, I don't believe in an afterlife and and believe that I will be worm food and worm food only when dead. I am not scared of dying, it's part of life, lets deal with it, I am also not scared that there is nothing after death, lights out and that is it, but how many people are scared of death? and why?

Some explanations would be nice please?
Atheist, agnostic, infidel, skeptic refer to persons not inclined toward religious belief or a particular form of religious belief. An atheist is one who denies the existence of a deity or of divine beings. An agnostic is one who believes it impossible to know anything about God or about the creation of the universe and refrains from commitment to any religious doctrine. Infidel means an unbeliever, especially a nonbeliever in Islam or Christianity. A skeptic doubts and is critical of all accepted doctrines and creeds.Any good?
I don't think you can necessarily associate the two, if you believe in God or not doesn't really come into it, there is the whole anxiety of 'what will it feel like' or 'will I suffer' or 'what if my beliefs are wrong' etc... whether you believe you are going to an afterlife or not would have little impact on these anxieties as no-one really knows for sure what to expect.

There's no point in being scared of death.
But how we actually go about dying - that might be quite dreadful.
No, no, in the religious thread a few people mentioned being scared of death as they knew not what was waiting for them.

I'm scared of how I'm going to die, just not being dead as there's nothing to worry about, which was my argument, but apparently there is

DMN, surely you have to agree though, it is a bloody stupid fear. Why fear something you CANNOT ever stop? whats the point? Face facts, if there has ever been anything that I have ever been certain on its that my life and everyone else's on here is going to end. It's guaranteed, thousands of years of people living and dying have shown us this.
Fear is often not a rational response. You could fear being eaten by a dinosaur, yet the probability that it would happen is pretty small (even less so if you are religious ...).There are reasons and triggers, sometimes deep rooted, but they have their reasons for being there. You cannot rationalise fear in a conscious context. But it can be resolved and removed very easily if you know how to.

get out!!!
So am I, and yesterday and the day before, etc etc etc.
I'll be honest, I am worry about dying.
I've always had a feeling I would die quite young and fear this.
I'm 40 next birthday, so technically not young anymore, but still too young to die.
ETA: However, I'll not turn to some fantasy being for guidance though.

Yes, I'm worried about dying, i.e. how I will die, how old, hope I will see my grandkids etc, however, I'm not scared of death, being dead like some are as I don't believe there can possibly be anything afterward which will effect me as I'll be dead so it can't.I've always had a feeling I would die quite young and fear this.

Has my poll gone to Rat s
t?I used to be scared of it.
I am not religious in the sense that I don't subscribe to an organised religion, but I do believe there's more than this, and that there is a "divine architect".
Then when my Dad was dying, something happened. He was a scientist. He didn't believe in the afterlife. In his final moments dying from cancer, and having been unconscious for hours, he sat upright in bed and said ina firm voice "but it's very claustrophobic".
I asked him what he meant, and he looked me in the eyes.
"That tunnel that they're showing me. Over there, look".
He passed away then.
I find much comfort in those moments.
