I've just watched all five seasons of the wire in the last couple of months. I know i'm a few years late here but i only found out about it recently but have got to say, this is without doubt, easily, the finest thing i have ever watched on a tv screen.
All the charactors are fantastic, they are so well acted, the content is so realistic, i'm truly blown away.
How on earth did this tv series not win award after award?
Gutted it has ended and there won't be any more but i understand why, it was wrapped up perfectly in series 5 there is no need to continue.
Thing is, what do i move onto now? whats out there that is even remotely close to the wire? any ideas?

Excellent, wasn't it? I got the 5 series box set for Christmas and I nailed all of them in about 5-6 weeks; truely one of the best shows around.

I've moved onto another show I never saw when it came out (battlestar galactica) and so far it's very, very promising.

They are both great series...

I am watching Band of Brothers (got the BluRay set for my birthday) for the first time (3 episodes in)... both me and SWMBO are completely hooked - can't wait to watch the next one... And then on to 'Pacific' at Easter

spelling duh...

Yeah i read about this show. David Simon did it before the wire again based on the streets of Baltimore. Has a few actors from the Wire in it also. Going to order it of Play.com.

Also just noticed David Simon has a new tv series debuting in April in the States again on HBO. Its called Treme and is about the aftermath of hurracaine katrina. Has Freamon and Bunk from the wire in it.

I'm halfway through series 3 of the wire - trying to cram in an episode each night (if my better half lets me!)

Finished the Sopranos at Xmas - I have 2 series of the wire to go, but Soporanos for me is the best series I've ever watched & truly gutted it is over

note: if you haven't watched sopranos & you buy the box set, the last one isn't the last one as there is a special DVD with the final, final episodes on

Editted to Add : BOB is absolutley superb. Generation Kill was pretty good but not a patch on band of brothers.
looking forward to the pacific - anyone know if this will be shown on plain old sky movies rather than Sky movies HD??

I still haven't seen The Wire, I started to watched it when it appeared on BBC 2 kast year but it was on too late for us early risers and I couldn't record it. I'll have to get the box set sometime.

For me Band of Brothers is the best TV series ever made with The Sopranos a close second so will have to see where The Wire fits in.

Greatest TV ever made imo. Generation kill is also very much worth a watch as there are a lot of the same people involved.

I rewatched all 5 series recently and it was even better the second time.. I can also recommend "The Wire..Truth Be Told" HBO book which has some great insider info and David Simon's "Homicide", his true story fly on the wall book, many elements of which found their way into the series.

Actually also check out the Guardian website as it has loads of blogs on each episode (which have now been published as a book) and finally the soundtrack CD ".. and all the pieces matter" which has some brilliant stuff on it as well as audio clips from the show.

You may guess that I'm a fan!

Looking forward to Treme too.. not seen any clips yet.

Favourite characters from the Wire anyone? I'd say Bodie for me..

Best "laugh out loud" moment? Rawls sat at the gay bar smile

What next (until Treme)? Currently enjoying Mad Men Season 3 on BBC HD and I've bought HBO's "John Adams" on DVD but nothing else comes close to The Wire.

My favourite laugh out loud moment was a drunken Bunk destroying the 'evidence'.

Same here, got it for crimbo, excellent.

Then watched "Underbelly" another superb vid.

And yes Battlestar Galactica was good also, you may like the rerun (nearly finished though) of Babylon 5 on Sky 1 Mon to Fri.

Good line in underbelly when guy says to his mates misses "Have you tried anal sex".

She says "Bugger that"..

After all of the PHer's creamed there kecks over the Wire I have watched all 5 series to see if it's as good as The Sopranos or the Sheild.

In a nutshell it definately isn't, it's good, very good in fact but vastly vastly overated.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Even when they're as wrong as you are.

Overraterd? no offence but you don't know what you are talking about. I know it's all about opinions but to call it overrated is crazy.
I got Generation kill but to be honest don't really enjoy it, every episode i've seen so far seems to be abit of an anti climax. Alot of time just doing nothing, no action, not that humourous.....i dunno, find it quite slow and boring.
Series 4 and 5 in my opinion are the best of the wire bunch. favorite character? erm thats a hard one, pretty much all the characters really are well developed and well acted they are all equally enjoyable in there own way. I guess i would say Mcnulty because as bad as it sounds i can see alot of myself in him.

I am a big admirer of The Wire - I place it in my favourite five TV shows of all time (along with The Shield, The Sopranos, Band of Brothers, and Curb Your Enthusiasm) but T89 Callan (sort of) has a point.

The way that critics and end-of-decade list compilers bang on about it being "the greatest TV show ever made" and "21st Century Dickens" etc. gets a tad wearing.

It is great TV, particularly Season 4 which is a masterpiece imo, but it's not head and shoulders above everything else.

An opinion of anything, is only as good as the individual thinks it it, after all how many of us rate Shakespere?

If you don't appreciate Shakespere, you wouldn't enjoy it, or rate it high would you.
