Off to the south of France this summer, looking currently at SE france (anywhere between Marseilles and Monaco), but have absolutely NO clue where down there is nice* anymore, and certainly not where is nice without spending a fortune.

So...suggestions please. Would probably want a beach resort (or somewhere close to a decent beach), but would also consider a second stop a little-way inland...perhaps across as far as the Camargue. And affordability is quite important...would rather not be paying through the nose just for the 'pleasure' of being in Cannes or Monte Carlo or wherever...it'd be nice to have some spare cash to go for some nice meals!

Cheers all,

Martin.

Quite like the Frejus/Saint Raphael area, have been there a few times now. Also round the coast past St Tropez it gets cheaper towards Toulon.

Stayed in Tourettes-sur-Loup last year and it was pretty good being a bit closer to Cannes and Nice and then a short hop up the coast to Monaco. It's also a nice drive back to the Verdon Gorge area from there, plus it's a bit quieter being inland a bit. There's also the benefit of great roads round there, the N85 is epic if you've never done it

Couple of us did a driving tour around France quite a few years back and concentrated along the South Coast for a week. The nicest place (apart from Nice) was Cassis which was beautiful, we just rocked up and found somewhere to stay

http://www.vaucluse-visites-virtuelles.com/glvirtu... One of my favourite places in the WORLD!! Loads of places to stay on the mainland, Giens, Hyeres, Toulon, all cheaper than the rest of the coast, loads of camping as well if thats your thing.

I thought it was a bit like blackpool myself.

Hyeres. Anywhere east of there falls foul of your affordability criteria (and Hyeres is stretching it somewhat). Otherwise Biarritz or Lacanau, which is just south of Bordeaux (so Atlantic coast, big waves).

TBH, with the pound where it's at,France will not seem that affordable anywhere.

I know, but circumstances dictate that if we want to do a road-trip in the NSX then this year may be the only chance we'll get. And the Euro now covers pretty-much everywhere drivable outside of our fair isle...

Another vote for Tourettes-sur-Loup. I go every year since friends have a house there. Despite being in a touristy area, it has a lovely village feel.

As said, 'interesting' roads up into the mountains. The kind where apexes are marked with bunches of flowers.

I agree, fantastic place. The wine they make there is great too!

On the mainland I am also particularly fond of Villefranche.
