I re-commisioned an old laptop i had for my father in law. Its an old Dell Latitude D610. It was working fine running Windows XP SP2. He uses it for web browsing and web-mail only.

Today he bought it back and said "it doesnt even start up any more".

Taking a look at it, it seems to run through the bios fine and after the standard windows password login it displays the wallpaper but also shows:

Explorer.exe - Application error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022) click on ok to terminate the application.

If i click ok, the laptop just hangs there. It will not display the windows bar or any of the icons.

What can i do to resolve this? I tried to conduct a system restore by 1 month, but its still the same.

run chkdsk from a boot disk- set options to recover bad sectors.

if you still have problems then you need to boot from a XP recovery disk (or USB stick as long as you have native USB support), backup files manually to the USB stick and then re-install windows.

you may have a hardware problem- either in RAM or with the HDD- the hex address is a RAM module i think (someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly i'm sure)
