This posting is likely to be in bits coz my pooter keeps crashing. Just stops, I get a blue screen & have to press on/off button for 5 secs to turn off & then on again.

Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and recovery settings > Untick the box for automatically restart.

Write down the error code and bung it into Google. Could be hardware like RAM on the way out or power supply failing to get enough power round, could be software related, if it's software, back up your files and re-install Windows rather than start chasing errors

First step do as above and find out what the error code is. You don't want to have to reinstall windows unless you really have to.

To reinstall insert the windows cd into the cd drive then boot up the computer. When its booting up it will tell you to press any key to boot from cd.
From there just follow the instructions and click on repair installation when it asks you. Be careful that you don't delete the partition!!

Check the fans first, if it's overheating it will do all kinds of things.

Have a google for it, there are loads of detailed guides out there

But before you start
Back up everything you want to keep first - photos, music, documents etc
Make sure you've got the Windows CD and the product key number
Get hold of all the latest drivers off the manufacturers websites - nothing worse than doing a re-install and finding you can't get back on the net.

In a nutshell:
Bung the windows disc in the drive, boot from the CD, follow the steps through, choose your hard drive you want to use, wipe your hard drive and it will re-install Windows from scratch, then put your drivers on, then antivirus, firewall and security, then Office, programs, then go to the Windows update site and update Windows.

My old desktop has been playing up a bit recently - overheating alarm keep sounding, screens hang up etc. I cleaned a load of dust out of the processor fan and it seems to have been ok since (fingers crossed).
