buying car without V5
Discussion
Guys,
I am buying a bmw without the v5 as it has been sent away to have a personal reg removed.
Has anyone been in this situation before and what did you do?
I want to get the car asap however the V5 is being sent away and could take up to 4 weeks.
I have heard of people arranging a contract of sale between the 2 parties confirm they car has been sold and v5 will be forwadred??? Does anyone have anything they can send me and how does is stand legally?
Thanks

I've just sold my M3 like that. Purchaser is witholding £100 until the V5 arrives. I then send it on to him. All written down, which I guess is a contract.
Would there be any why you could email me outline of what is written as it sounds like just what I need.mscott@frs.co.uk
Done this lots of times. As someone else as said get two letters drafted for each of you to sign. The seller signs one stating that as long as funds have cleared bla bla bla he has no legal title to the car and he will post the V5 when he gets it. At the end of the day as long as he has got his money and you have the car it is of no benfit to him whatsoever to keep hold of the V5.
This is all assumes that you are happy that the seller is the legal owner of the car. If you have any doubt do all the due diligence you need to make you happy such ask for copies of driving license and utility bill, do an HPI, etc.

get the car checked with a provenence company. I work for HPI, we strongly advise against buying without, i do understand there are many legitimate reasons why the v5 is not there, but i have to deal with stolen and cloned motors every day and you'd be surprised how often the V5 isn;t available. Seeing the V5 is a good way of confirming that the person you are buying it from is the person registered on the V5 and also to check the VIN matches the VRM
