Internet Problems
Discussion
Really confused here.
Running XP on a Dell Pc via a Linksys router to Virgin Media ISP.
Up until a couple of days ago everything was running fine then I suddenly cannot connect to the WWW or my email.
If I type in a web address, www.pistonheads.com or www.bbc.co.uk, I get a message back "Firefox cannot find the server ..." at whichever server I have tried to connect to.
If I try to ping bbc.co.uk or pistonheads.com I get the message "Ping request could not find host". If I ping the actual IP addresses I get a response.
If I type the BBC ip address into Firefox I get a text page up saying that the page I have tried to access is not valid and set of text URLs to try. If I select any of those then I am back to the server not found message.
My email, Microsoft Outlook, is acting similarly. When it tries to access my mail servers an error comes back saying the servers cannot be found.
I am typing this on an old Windows 98 machine which I have connected to the same cable, to the router, that the XP machie uses, and everything seems to be working. This suggests there is a problem with the XP machine.
Anyone got any ideas ?

Try opendns
https://store.opendns.com/setup/operatingsystem/wi...
Alternatively use google dns, servers are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, same procedure as above

If I were you, I would go into network settings and (control panel, network connections or something similar) right click on the adapter - properties - find IP4 and then click settings and check make sure DHCP is enabled.
Have you installed anything or changed anything?
Apologies if some of the names differ slightly, I'm running windows 7.

Thanks for the quick response guys.
Muntu,
I guessed that it was a problem with DNS but it has been so long since I set this up that I had forgotten where/how to do it.
I have now added the Open DNS and Google IP addresses and things appear to be working. I am typing this on the XP machine.
Thank you very much for your help.
