Hi chaps having just put me engine together I now have a problem, each time I go to use the car I have to prime the oil pump as cant get it to prime its self!!

Anyone had this problem before?

Not heard of that but a problem that does happen occasionally is that the oil pipe / strainer comes loose in the sump and can loose pressure & fluid that way.

It's just a matter of dropping the sump and doing up the bolt that attaches the oil strainer.

Have you done the pack it with vaseline procedure to get the initial prime for the oil system?

Do you mean grease or petroleum jelly? Only the latter should be used. Whilst the cover was off for the repacking, did you look at the relief valve and its channel for signs of sticking? Once the system is primed and running, is the oil pressure normal?

Hang on, don't jump yet.

OK, someone correct me here, is the base plate the filter sits on part of keeping the oil up?

Dont chuck it in.

Lock it away for a while, then give it another go.

You will regret it.

If that dont work, pm me with some details.

Give Rob Robertson a call at V8 developments - might be just the oil pump needs to be refurbished.

Did the engine have any issues before you started ?

What rebuild work has been done.

The oil flow is a fairly simple one - are you using the correct oil filter, oil cooler - are the unions to the pump the right way round etc ..

You are nearly there, just a last detail! Especially after all the work that has been done.
As mentioned before, make sure the oil pump and relieve valve (the spring can be notorious) are ok. If not replaced lately, I would replace it completely as it doesn't cost a lot, put 20W50 oil in, prime it and enjoy a good run out.

I have restored many cars over the years, American and British but the most frustrating thing about my TVR is the components used are quite basic, yet I have had nothing but bother since I started the restore, I have now primed the pump 4 times and each time its been OK until the next day as the oil each time has drained from the pump.

I can understand the frustration but not the presumption that simply retrying the same process will actually solve a hard fault. More so as you have not described here or in your other thread, any corrective actions taken.

Suggest that as most RV8 rarely if ever behave as described, even after months or years of storage, then your engine oil circulation system must be compromised, allowing crankcase, rocker cover, sump or other internal source of air into the oiling system for it to drain down overnight.

Worn pump gears, worn pressure relief valve, pickup strainer/tube disconnected, system incorrectly assembled, wrong/rogue oil filter, oil much too thin, inappropriate modifications to filter location - all come to mind.

I'm not at all comfortable with engine mechanics myself, but I sense that these things and others will need to be addressed individually before the error is located.

The oil pump covers are pants. I'll be fitting a flowtech one from RPI and getting rid of the cooler when I've a) got the cylinder head back on the Polo and b) got the megasquirt on the Tiv...

Busy easter!
