I have the task of buying myself a suit for my wedding, however I need to choose something nice.

I haven't exactly got a Savile Row budget but it needs to be sharp, elegant and must include or offer a waist coat.

The first designer that springs to mind is Boss which more or less is my budget, although I'd like to know more about Boss Tailored suits. (Anyone out there with one of these?) Their suits are cracking but I want to see and know what else is out there.....

Ideas? Suggestions?

M&S or get one tailored (just not in Savile Row, or even London). Boss always strike me as being like a pair of pricey shoes with placcy soles or glued leather soles. A fine looking pair, but still a bit neither here nor there.

Armani or Cerruti (dont be caught out by a Cerruti cloth label though: 'Super 120' etc) would provide better value for money than Boss. Paul Smith will also fit better and look smarter for less than my first two suggestions. The only really positive thing that I can think of to say about Hugo Boss suits, is that after putting on one stone over Christmas, my previously unworn Boss is the only suit that really hides it.

I'd go with this. I've both rented (wedding) and bought (black tie event). With renting you can choose exactly what is right for each occasion and get the perfect fit for the shape you are at the time.

renting will be about £150 for anything half decent. Not checked where you live but google slaters, they are great for suits and for £200 you will get sorted out, don't do it cheaply and look like tat on the day.

I had my first fitting for my wedding suit last week. I decided to get a decent lounge suit made rather than hire a morning suit.

It'll be my first genuinely bespoke suit (not 'made to measure' - there is a difference) and it's already looking stunning. The taper in the back and sides looks superb and the trousers are hugely flattering.

It's only costing £750 - similar quality workmanship/fabric would be at least £2500 from a Saville Row tailor.

As it's bespoke I had complete control over EVERY element of the suit - even down to having the stiching on the front sleeve cuff buttonhole matching the burgundy colour of the lining.

Also unlike many Saville Row places I'm actually dealing directly with the guy who's making the suit, rather than to some sales guy who passes on my requirements to a guy upstairs or abroad.

Do a Google for Georges Tailor in Haringey - he doesn't have a website but his contact details are out there.

Lots of Far East tailors visiting. See if you can get a recommendation to one who will knock you up something made to measure at a fraction of the price.

Outlet store? Paul Smith, Gieves & Hawkes, etc + adjustments will cost you 350-400 ish, and you will have a suit that will last a very long time.

Let's be logical about this - will you ever wear it again in the next few years? If so, get a decent suit - suits worn regularly need to be of a minumum standard of quality or you will look like a rag-bag. (As a academic, it doesn't matter for me however, I have the inbuilt ability to look like a rag-bag no matter how good the garment is)

If you are NOT going to wear it more than once or twice - get a modest cheap suit like an M&S one - it only needs to look decent for a couple or hours - later in the day everyone will be pissed and even the ones in expensive cloths will look tatty....

Good call, there's also Hackett,Aquascutum,Paul Smith,Ralph Lauren,Zenga or Gieves & Hawkes. If you're feeling brave there's also Gucci or Dolce & Gabanna.

You must find something that fits on budget in that lot.

The Suit Supply Company just round the corner from Gieves in Saville Row is ok for a £250 - £300 suit and they will alter it on the premises for you.

I hired a good business suit for £60, perfect fit. If I was buying I would definitely do one of the shopping vilages like Bicester, York or Cheshire Oaks.
