"A FORMER Labour cabinet minister has boasted about how he used his government contacts to change policies in favour of businesses.

Stephen Byers, former trade and transport secretary, was secretly recorded offering himself “like a sort of cab for hire” for up £5,000 a day. He also suggested bringing Tony Blair to meet clients.

He was among several politicians recorded by an undercover reporter posing as a company executive looking to hire MPs for lobbying work.

The others included:

- Patricia Hewitt, a former health secretary, who claimed she helped to obtain a key seat on a government advisory group for a client paying her £3,000 a day.

- Geoff Hoon, the former defence secretary, offered to lead delegations to ministers and told the reporter that he was looking to turn his knowledge and contacts into “something that frankly makes money”. He said he charged £3,000 a day.

- Margaret Moran, the Luton MP who was forced to pay back £22,500 in expenses, boasted that she could ring a “girls’ gang” of colleagues on behalf of clients. Among those she named were: Jacqui Smith, the former home secretary; Hazel Blears, the former communities secretary; and Harriet Harman, the deputy leader of the Labour party."

So, that's Stephen Byers the Trotskyist??!!!

Has there ever been any doubt?

The Conservatives couldn't keep it in their pants, but at least they got the job done. Labour prefer to shat on their own doorstep and bring to crookedness to work with them.

Really? I think most people will just sigh and resign themselves that its the sort of thing politicians do anyway. The 30% that will vote Labour whatever the circumstances won't care unless if affects their public sector job/advisory consultancy or their benefits payments.

I think you are failing to recall history:

"Senior members of the Shadow Cabinet have been accused of potential conflicts of interest after their offices were shown to be funded by companies that have direct interests in their policy portfolios."

source

And under the previous conservative government there was "Cash-for-questions affair"

All politician are corrupted, it's the system that must be changed.

If the job gets done and country does well, I have no problem with politicians lining their own pockets.

It's when the country is turning to sh*t because the job isn't getting done and the country isn't doing well and the rats are using our cash to buy themselves 'bouyancy aids' for when their ship sinks, that I find it distasteful.

They are both as bad as each other but at least the Tories don't pretend to be socialists, looking out for the common man etc etc. Well the old Tories didnt, I guess Call Me Dave is another story.

If the article is correct, I think it goes a bit deeper than that.

The article claimed that:

"He claimed to have struck a secret deal with Lord Adonis, the transport secretary, last year on behalf of National Express, which he said was seeking to jettison a loss-making East Coast rail franchise without penalties. Byers said: “We agreed with Andrew ... he would be publicly very critical of National Express” as long as he agreed terms which favoured the company. The decision to terminate the franchise in July last year left a burden on the taxpayer of hundreds of millions of pounds."

So National Express escape with a slapped wrist, the RMT are delighted that the East Coast Line will be nationalised, Byers runs off with his plain envelopes, and the taxpayer is hundreds of millions out of pocket.

Of course there is some interaction between the private sector and the government, but what is being claimed is that some MPs are not even trying to serve public interests. In fact, their bank balance seems to be their most important concern, even at the expense of public interests.

Yep, that's my main problem. This lot appear to be operating in close the fraudulent levels when operating as Govt - at least the Tories mainly were involved in sex scandals etc..

Yes, I don't think "cash for questions" was actually as serious as this seems. I haven't watched the news yet today, I suppose the BBC are treating it as their main story aren't they or more likely not.
