It's odd. It keeps stalling after loading about 5 online pages (offline is fine). It's not my connection because Firefox is working fine to load pages and I'm also streaming internet radio. Sometimes clicking reload about 10000 times finally kicks it into action but the first click can result in it hanging with a blank page, the previous page visible or half the new page loaded. I've disabled most add-ons as googling the problem seemed to suggest this might be the reason.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I have been looking at 2 pc's today having problems with ie8 seemingly after the browser choice window popped up. Neither will revert back to a previous setting with system restore.
Also slightly different to your problem, Firefox won't work on them either - i'm still battling with one of them.
Hope you get yours sorted.

open internet options / advanced then click the reset button see if it helps.

Your must be the 20th report of IE8 busting in the last 2 weeks mine included. But the reset option worked most of the time.

If yours are on a domain with forced proxy settings then check that the proxy is enabled, that was another thing that broke I had to force a registry entry to fix it.

Thanks, i've tried that and many other things but it didn't work for me.

The 2 pc's are at completely differet locations and not connectd in any way, one is acting as a file server, the other is my laptop

Thanks. Odd. Was there an update in the last 2 weeks?

I've tried registry edits, reinstalling ie8 and reinstalling windows over the existing (as a desperate try) all to no avail. No other browser will work either which is strange, but ping rates are ok. Still digging.
