If my maths is right that is less than 6 miles to the gallon, get it onto a computer quickly, hopefully just one of the sensors gone faulty if its not then I imagine it may become a very expensive repair or an excuse for a 4.3 conversion.

So IMO the thread title is not the real issue. What I believe you're saying is that it is using oil, running lumpy and eating fuel. That's not a little thing to think about fixing. IMO you should get it to a specialist asap, these cars need to be looked after. It might be a simple problem, but whatever the case you minimise the cost and other issues by getting it sorted before driving it too much.
