Hi all, I need some help with the wires that run to the coil on a v8 3.5 rover coil. I've looked at the wiring diagram and can see there's a positive from the fuse to the + on the coil but what is the one from the starter meant to do ??confused I'm doing a Monster truck up for a friend but someone has messed about with the wiring system!!
By the way its a standard system with points, so just the one wire from coil to points.

Andy,
P.s I buy any old massey tractors if you have one for salesmile

I think that you will find that the wire to the coil, from the fuse box, includes a resistor and the one from the starter solonoid feeds a full 12volts, while starter is operating.

If you have a feed from the starter then the coil is probably supposed to be 9 volt rather than 12.
It gets 9 volt via the resistor when running but more than that during cranking. In principle it is over volting the coil during start but in reality the volts available during crank will be quite a bit less than 12 due the the cranking load.

Thanks chaps, does that mean I need a 9v coil ? I have had problems with the cables feeding the coil from the fuse over heating and melting!!!!eek to be honest the whole wiring syatem is a mess!

Just looked in the Haynes work shop manual and all diagrams show a wire from the starter motor and fuse, guess I need to check with someone who has a
range rover with v8 engine, would a 12 volt coil work if i get rid of the starter feed?

Andy.

Had a look in my Haynes and the early 3.5 had a 6 volt coil Lucas 16C6 (internal resistance 1.4 ohm) and was connected to ignition via a ballast resistor Lucas 3BR.

Thanks Steve, I've now wired it up from ignition via a ballast resistor and and new ballast coil. Got rid of starter wire as there was another 12 volt off the ignition available for the boost at the start!
I'm now looking to replace the SU carb's as they are sh~t!!! Anyone got a holly carb and manifold??

SU's should be OK mine made 136BHP on a Defender spec lump with them. If you must change then the Edelbrock/Carter/Webber 500 is better. The 7 had one of these when it was rebuilt together with an Offy 360m manifold.
