tell me about ford/jag duratec V6
Discussion
wahst the deal with the duratec V6? found favour in twin turbo form in Nobles, is all alloy and lightish (170kg from what ive seen) but very little in the way of tuning stuff from the usual suspects such as burtons etc.
anyone know who does bits for them? any experience of them? are they 'old skool' ford bellhousing bolt pattern or something different?
cheers for the info in advance

No idea...but given its fitted to very few performance orientated vehicles, thats maybe why nobody bothers with it.
Ford owners seem to just stick with the Zetec or that silly old Pinto thing with lots of valves :P
I'm sure the V6 would be a goog option for many, although perhaps more complicated with wiring etc ? Is the BH pattern the same as typical Fords ?

Which version are you after? The Ford engine was fixed cam, but the Jag version is a variable jobbie. And it doesn't use the standard Ford BH pattern either, although if you go for the Jag engine, it does already have a RWD box attached to it. As for tuning bits, when I was looking the only stuff I could find was either turbo kits, ala Noble or inlet upgrades from the ST220 IIRC. I decided it wasn't worth the bother and got rid of my engine and decided that tuning the Alfa V6 was a better idea. Although due to other things I have had to put those plans on hold too as the Alfa is not cheap to tune. There are may options out there though.
is the Jag version rwd then? i assumed it was X type only (4wd transverse).
weight is critical too, not for a road car. I know that its been used in various Ford and mazda platforms, in 2.5, 3L & 3.5L in US, basically looking at any known weakpoints (cologne cossie chain tensioners, K series headgaskets etc etc) and pointers for base engine to start with.
id assumed to get 350-400hp on a budget (not £20k for a 350hp N/A race motor) it would be pr of turbos (T28s a al Noble M400) or supercharger which seem popular in US.

If you want a high power, light weight V6 go for the 2.5L Mazda V6 with some turbos strapped to it. Have a Youtube for some films of some very high revving NA engines and some big power turbo jobs too.
the mazda v6 is the duratec but with VVT cams similar to the jag version apparently.Milky Bar Kid said:

come on, post the links!
NB i think the 'ford' v6 was actually form mazda, or at least developed by them both..... also a 2.0ltr version was used in fords BTCC car. that made over 300bhp N?A with a 8500rpm rev limit (capped by the regs...)

Never heard of anyone really tuning these. If you want easy power go for a 2.9V6 Cosworth from the old Grandad. Think you can get 210bhp. Some of the Scandanavians strap turbos onto these to get much more. Far easier option is probably just to buy a Cosworth YB.
colognes too heavy, and too big, very wide up top. Cossie YBs hardly cuting edge either and is a 4 pot turbo so F-all grunt unless the turbos is blowing hard. Also heavy and tall. Like the idea of smaller turbos (T25-28s) rather than a T34-T4 to get 425+hp. Should give a more track friendly power curve too, without the near vertical torque 'curve' of a big turbo'd 4 pot (been there, done that, fancy a change)The Palmer JP1 runs the dura V6 at 300hp NA, and Nobles are turbo'd 350-420 dependant on whether the 2.5L or 3L, and the Ginetta G50s run the US truck SVT 3.5L version NA
id really like to know of weak points as mentioned, most engines have foibles, but looks like infos thin on the ground.
will keep you all posted with progress though

youd be surprised, the Noble engine is near stock! save for forged pistons which lower the CR, mod to the (transverse) sump in the M12s, different exh manifolds, and mods to trunking to the throttle body. I think thats where a lot of the cost savings were made by noble, hence it was nice and cheap in the UK compared to a similarly performing Porsche etc and more reliable than a similar TVR with its bespoke engines.

TheNoble 3.0 ltrs use cast pistons (poss. stock items) and shorter rods to get the corect comp. ratio......Chris.
