OK.. I really should know this...
Just stuck my trusted FireWire card into my new Dell PC running XP pro.. and doesnt appear to know it's there. Annoyingly I cant find the packaging that came with the card to see if there was a disk, though IIRC there wasnt; Win 2K in the old pc found it easily enough.
Does something to do with a 1394 file ring a bell out there my PC buddies ?!
Cheers

Whoops .. now that's embarassing! I had pushed it home firmly enough. Now I have, the external drive was found 1s time.
BUT.. now the modem's buggered. Ace. Connects fine but wont browse the web / receive mails. Always sticks on 215 bytes inbound. Have taken the card out, moved slots (oh btw fired up old PC to send this) etc etc.. using same phoneline cable as I am now & have run out of ideas. Device mamager seems to think it's all tickety-boo too.. passes all tests.
Balls.. this was the very last thing to set up new PC. Dont suppose anyone's got any thoughts ? Suppose it's possible its the ISP, but it has been like this for several hours now. Also possible that the modem's failed.. but reckon it's something else.

Afraid not.. its a PCI card modem. Tried again just this morning on hope it was the ISP.. sadly the same. It still connects perfectly, but receieves b*gger all (i.e. a hundred bytes here & there) no matter what I try to do. Will have a major tinker this weekend. Or buy another modem card (not too dear these days I think). Cheers for suggestions all, though !

Had exactly the same problem last week
XP should have the IEEE1394 drivers installed. However, they weren't on mine! And doesn't sound like it's on your either.
If you have the XP setup disc, you should be able to install the driver manually (ie through Control Panel, Hardware, Drivers etc).
My OS was pre installed when i bought the PC and only got a recovery disc with it - no good. I spent 5 hours searching the web for drivers.
I will email you the drivers you need this evening (at work at mo!). This should cure your problem.
sometimes i wish i had an Apple...

Do you have a comm port assigned to your pci modem card?
...
BTW - I NEVER use internal modems because I have yet to find one that doesn't cause major system problems. Much easier just to hook one up to a serial port (as external modems seem to be the only reason to still have a comm port on a pc). Externals are great - if you have a problem, no need to go rooting around inside the box. Also - try multitech modems if you can - these are the most trouble free that I have ever had...

...and my Road Angel
The com port assignation appeared to change depepnding on which slot I shoved the card into. I assume 1 & 2 are the 2 9 pin jobs at the back of the PC, then 3,4 or 5 were taken by the card depending where it was. Dont know how the OS sorts this Com port out. If I moved the modem to 5, then 3 & 4 reported 'in use' which seemed odd.
I've still got an old external 56K job somewhere.. maybe I'll just pop that it. Was trying to keep my 'office' (read cupbaord) tidy

I think you'll find that the OS remembers old cards and what com port they were using, which is why the com port changed when you move it from slot to slot i.e. it thought it was seeing a new card each time and assigning a different com port.
This means I can ignore the number jumping? Or should I free up the non-used 'in use' ones ?
Ta all
Ed
There is usually a selection in the modem properties tab pages where you can assign a com port to the particular modem. Not knowing which brand (and even if I did - probably couldn't figure it out) it is hard to say. I would try the modem manufacturer's web site (with your old PC) and look for any troubleshooting related to the problem...

HOly cr*p this is annoying. Binned the PCI card & put another one in (that I know is A OK).. guess what.. exactly the same - connects fine but that's all. Then had a look through the system resources everything & found one of the USB ports using IRQ 19 as was the modem, so disabled that port. Did it help? Did it

Time to go outside & kick something

Utterly agree.. but oh dear.. the Dell has a single 9 pin serial port. . meaning cant update the Road Angel.
Meanwhile, things have gone from **** to ******* ****
I think I'm looking at a slow re-install after wiping the drive.. something really screwy is going on now. And I'll make several system restore points along the way. Happy ,happy days.
Still, May Payne 2 runs soooo well on it
