I am on the lookout for either a 4.2 or a 4.5 (preferably the latter) with all ancillaries, induction and preferably exhaust headers, in running order.

Have tried eBay and there is a fire damaged 4.2 on there, but I can't seem to find many others. Is there a specialist TVR breaker?

Any ideas how much we should be paying for a 2nd hand AJP8 engine?

Cheers

Perosnally I'd phone a few of the specialists out there I know of a few AJP's kicking about in work shops not sure if they were for sale or not.

An 'Almost new' 4.5 engine recently sold for about £6K. From what I recall used AJP's seem to start from around the £3k mark.

£3K for that one, I think that if the engine is from the red car shown then it is a 4.2 (per wheels and rear badge).
It could be a gamble, you wouldnt want to pay for a rebuild on top of that price.

I have a 4.2 spare with all the bits you need, loom ECU, headers, even the A/C pump.

Drop me a line through the email in my profile.

I thought Douglas Valley might have some, but I wrote it off without even calling as I was sure they would be prohibitively expensive. Having said that, I have seen damaged cars go for around 5k, which could pay me back in other parts.

3k seems resonable for a 2nd hand engine, but I must admit to hoping for a bargain. I would be willing to rebuild over a period of time hence why this engine looks potentially of interest, financially as well as giving me a project:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

The eBay ad for the 3k engine does say it is a 4.5, but, you are right, looks like a 4.2 car. Hmmmm...

I probably should have said that this engine will not be afor a TVR but for a light race car project, which requires a light V8. They don't get much lighter than the AJP engine, especially for the power. In other words, I don't have to have the loom and ECU as I may go bespoke/ Emerald something like that, but the induction parts would be useful so I didn't have to buy TB's.

Ridds, will PM you now. Cheers, Dom

Isn't it a 4.2 engine when they have the twin fuel rail across the top?

Generally, yes, but I was assured last week by a TVR specialist that some "4.2" cars left the factory with 4.5 engines but the 4.2 fuel rail etc - so it looked like a 4.2. Apparently the 4.2 fuel and intake system gives better torque.

Reason I was discussing this is that my engine is out of the Cerb because of the long-standing overheating problem, and we were discussing rebuild / replace options, including that 4.5 that STR8 Six were selling (and no it wasn't me who bought it!) and re-using the 4.2 fuel system.

I have just had my 4.5 rebuilt as a redrose and used a 4.2 fuel system,Although i have not picked it up yet Automedon say the fuel system works well and is a good improvment over the original. Can't wait!
Back to the op,If your not in to much of a rush have you looked on bluecycle?I have seen damaged cerbs sell on there for not alot more than the engine on ebay,You could hear it run before you bought it and you would have a load of spares to sell.

I thought it was just the 4.5 crank that the 4.2's got..?

Does the 4.5 crank increase the capacity to 4.5 litres on its own? Assume the rest of the engine spec (cams, induction, exhaust, ECU,....power?) all stay the same?

If you want to try and find a cheap earlyish 4.2 (<1998), I have a full race small journal 4.5 billet steel crank going spare as well as a brand new set of 4.5 pistons and know where a new set of race cams are sitting. Pull the 4.2 apart, bore it and stick some new liners in and the rest should transfer over leaving you with a solid race 4.5!

Pm me if you're interested otherwise I'll put the bits on Ebay at some point soon..!

Edit: I'm also ordering a couple of Emeralds for racing use this week at a bit of a discount. If you're interested, again PM me!

Edit again: And I'm also an Oil and Gas consultant engineer!

I thought they were the same bar the 'top end' - I assumed this was just the induction, rails, heads and cams ....?

Nick, probably a bit early for me to think about pulling a good engine apart and replacing the internals. I really want a working engine to prove the concept, make sure it fits, get teh car running and then at that point, look at upgrading the engine.

Seeing as a working 4.2 seems like the cheapest/ easiest route to doing this, I think that is probably what I should be on the lookout for and once everything is fitted up and proven, I could maybe go the 4.5 and race internals route...

So, thanks for the offers Nick, but I will probably leave it for now and get a complete, running engine to save some time.

What project are you working on? PM me if that is better?!

No problem at all, I'll stick the bits up on Ebay or something if no one makes me an offer. What car are you thinking of dropping the engine into?

I'm building up a hard top Tuscan Challenge car at the moment to hopefully race this year if I get it finished any time soon! I was going to build up a small journal 4.5 engine hence the bits but I've since changed my mind and am going for a new 4.7 engine with a large main crank, dry sumped, external oil and water pumps etc. Should be a good'un when it's running, can't bloody wait!

Your car sounds like a really nice project, a 4.7 should be quite fruity! My project is not TVR based but would be a two seat, mid engined, closed trackday car. It should be pretty light and pretty quick, but I am not convinced, as things stand that there is room for a V8, though if there is any chance of getting one in there, the AJP is the one to try... Plus it produces the power!

Had a quick look at your profile, you sound like you are in the same line of business as my missus and father-in-law, I hope you don't work with them as this project is my secret - LOL!

Thanks to everyone for their offers of engines by the way. I actually thought it would take more 'digging' than this and I would actually have to spend a few weeks hunting one down, especially at a good price. I need to do a bit of measuring, possibly cutting and definitely some drawing before I pick one up, but the fact that a few seem to be available has made me want to get on with it!

Have you looked at Raceproveds website? They helped with an F3000 AJP build. So they have experience of mid engined track based cars.
