Removing a false ceiling

I’m planning to remove false ceiling tiles from my bathroom and kitchen. From what I can tell it’s simply a case of removing the tiles to expose the original ceiling and tube lights. I gather once the tiles are down I then need to find out how the frame was put together and then break that.

Does anyone have any comments for things that I need to look out for? For what it matters I want to put up new lighting and I will re-plaster the original ceiling if necessary. However, I assume the false ceiling tiles aren’t hiding anything but were there for ‘effect’.

Yes, that’s the type.

usually installed in houses where the original ceilings are totally fked - they hide a multitude of sins (sorry)

the tiles pop out with no bother and the grid will be screwed to the wall at the perimeter and wire hung to the soffit in the middle

should be very easy to remove but I'd imagine that the ceiling above will be fooked too

you may find that it will need to be taken down, re-plasterboarded and skimmed

Thanks for the information. I guess the work isn’t too much for the bathroom as that room is getting a full renovation. However, it does make me think twice about doing the same to the kitchen.

Will the time delay in removing the tiles tonight and then not doing any remedial work for a few weeks cause any problems? For example I’m worried about the steam from the bath and shower causing further damage. I’ll have a look tonight and report back.

you can pop the tiles out have a look and stick them back - it won't cause any issue
