OK so Clio 182 needs it's timing belt done. Absolutely needs to be done by someone with the proper renault cam locking tools. Failing my local garage having them/being able to get them I need a backup plan.

So need a garage that knows what their doing with (semi)performance cars. The 182 is quite a tricky engine to work on with the lack of space and they absolutely must have access to the genuine renault tools, the laser tools just aren't strong enough and I dont want my timing fecked up.

Any ideas?

You could always try your local dealer.

They are horendously expensive though. Phoned around today to get quotes and they range from £568 to £713 just for the cambelt and aux belt inc pulleys and tensioner.

If I drive just south of Manchester I can get a specialist to do it all for £410, or £470 including a full service.

Was hoping there would be an independant up here that could do the job without the 50% markup for it being a main dealer.

I'd avoid Evans Halshaw like the plague. Perhaps try the Renault garage in Brechin instead if you must have it serviced at a main dealer? A friend of mine is taking his R27 there because he knows that the dealer in Aberdeen will more than likely screw it up!

Failing that, most decent garages will have the required tool or you could try my mates out in Insch: JD Motors. They have a sterling reputation on here for a reason and also replaced the cambelt on my '98 Clio; so I'd imagine they'd be able to help you out. Call either John or Dave on 01464 821151 and tell them Simon sent you. Their labour rates are also beyond reasonable.

Why spend a fortune on petrol and accomadation going south to save 200 quid on the job. You say you want it done properly... Take it to renault and stop whining, you should have known the running costs when you purchased the car.

I would trust the specialist a hell of a lot more than I would trust any Renault dealer. £110 petrol there and back no accomodation needed.

Could try Jim King Auto Tunes (lethenty mill), they've got much knowledge and many cars there... They will source genuine parts and know there way around cars... Although i know for a fact they're not really fond of working on Clio's and french cars... lol purely because of the tight space... but could give them a phone and ask for a quote.

There is a really good Renault dealer in Portsoy up towards Banff. I took my 172 cup up there for lots of work when i had it. Friendly garage with people who actually know what they are doing.

Evans Halshaw, safer to do the work yourself than let them have a go.

Renault Garage in Memsie near Fraserburgh sorted out my brother in laws Megane Sport recently - much better attirude and cheaper/easier to deal with than the dealer in Aberdeen.

I second JD they just love there automobiles and with Dave just buying a Elise you can get the lowdown on how good the wee car is at no extra cost.

Well after calling round all the renault main dealers in Scotland I eventually got a deal I couldn't refuse. Ness motors in Inverness were about £200 cheaper than some of the other quotes and only £40 more than my local garage. So feel like it's worth £40 for a main dealer stamp and 12 months parts/labour warranty.

Also almost exactly matched the price of taking it to a specialist down south if you include the extra petrol cost to get there.
