Need some magazines printed
Discussion
A good friend of mine needs some magazines printed and she asked if I can help her out. Unfortunately we're in the screen print industry and not litho so I'm in no position to help. There are two options she'd like quotes for.
Are there any PHers that fancy doing the work for a keen price?
Details are as follows:
Option A)
Magazine size: A4
Cover: PLANOart 300g
Inside/Text: 120gsm (uncoated or coated) Tauro
65 pages
Full colour Litho
Saddle Stitched
Option B)
Magazine size: A4
Cover: 200gsm Cyclus Offset Paper
Inside/Text: 115gsm Cyclus Paper
65 pages
Full colour Litho
Saddle Stitched
Quantites for both options will be 600, 1000 & 2000.
Thanks all.

Email it to Jason Jacobs at www.printman.co.uk. They do all our printing (inc mags) and are almost always the cheapest (they are print brokers).

That's correct.
Why's that?
Number of pages needs to be divisible by 2. Why's that?
Your buddy will have the most cost effective job done with two 32 sections + covers = 64 at 120gsm + FC, IFC, IBC, BC.
Also, if the flatplan is right you can ensure copy comes in in sections so one can be sent off to the printers if someone is dragging their heels without holding up the job (colour code the sections to help - pages 1,2,63,64 are the same sheet etc).
Magazine printers are in a terrible state at the mo, so get quotes from at least 3 and sit tight; wait for them to chase you - be honest and give them the lowest quote but you want to go with them, yada-yada.
Google (if they're still in business & in no particular order) -
- Stephens & George
- St Ives
- Warners
- PCPltd
Print prices are seriously negotiable.
Good luck with the project,
Don
(PS - make sure you get the spec right - "64 + covers" (that's 68 pages inc.) - oh and don't forget the postage, find out whatever the equivalent of 'Press Stream 2' is nowadays, making sure your mailing house can collate postcodes in batches)
You can do 65 pages but it means a bound in leaf which is just dumb from a cost point of view tbh - is the extra "page" a throw out on the cover or an inside page by any chance. Otherwise what donny mac says.
They are also really quite small print runs and tbh will get in the way of a few printers who are tied down with weekly and monthly contracts.
Why so small? What is the title? There is an argument that if your friend doesn't know how many she'll sell/distribute, she could go POD and print them digitally.................

It must be the red wine, but how do you get to 65 pages, or any odd numbered pagination?Fold an A4 sheet = 4 pages, stitch a single leaf and you get 6 pages with an ugly spread and a readership that knows an advertiser pulled on you or planning was god-awful.
If miraculously you can pull a single page from thin air... what’s on the other side of it?
Not being rude, I just cannot see where you can generate a singular page from

She means stitching an additional page in somehow, will need a short stub on the otherside of the stitch tho and look terrible - its done on nhs ncr agreements for example.
Alternatively it could have a fold out cover - my guess is the person hasn't a clue about printing and that the artwork will be equally troublesome.
edit way too small to be produced in 32pp sections too.
Simon.

Thanks Broc, but stitching in a page with a stub gives you two more pages, not one; grab a magazine or a newspaper, get a single sheet of paper and put it in anywhere you like... now count how many pages you have...Alternatively it could have a fold out cover - my guess is the person hasn't a clue about printing and that the artwork will be equally troublesome.

I bet, two more (write +1 on one side of the sheet and +2 on the reverse of the inserted sheet - we'll ignore the stub as it doesn't count).
Or, let's have a fold out cover... two more pages! - admittedly you could create a DPS but that's known as a Double Page Spread.
Have I gone bonkers?
About relaxing, my long day or the printed page? ;-)
An easier, more understandable, way to describe the spec would be a wiro bound training document.
In these you may have a 1pp front and back covers and say a 19pp document inside, all wiro bound. By defining a page as 1pp you only have to print on one side, not 2 even tho it is a double sided page, one is blank. So, say these documents were printed in colour digitally, you'd only pay for the clicks for the actual printed sides.
Probably not explained this terribly well but from a spec point of view a 65pp document may have 65 printed sides with one blank.

Phew, I had thought that I'd gone mental. Thanks for the response - but pagination is calculated by pages, not ink on pages, otherwise the OP could have a 320 page magazine with only the front cover having any ink on.
Still a 320 page magazine, just 319 pages have no content - I'd be amazed if anyone described it as a 1 page magazine.
Although in your type of industry I do understand your thought process to printed pagination from a payment perspective.
I can rest easy now knowing string theorists’ haven't yet managed to create the single page.

My industry is print solutions from digital through to web ... with glued in, stitched in single leaves not common at all. Needs a rethink on the design this job.
