My site just received a delivery of insulation from France on a German registered lorry.

The lads on site opened the (security sealed) curtain sided trailer to start unloading and two Jonathan Foreigner types jumped out of the back, ran down the delivery yard, knocked the security guard over who was just closing the gates and buggered off towards the city centre. One of them turned around on his way through the gate and blew a kiss to one of the lads who had tried to “rugby tackle” him and missed.

A few personal belongings in the back of the truck, razor and shaving foam, folded maps of UK cities, a few Euros, gloves and scarfs etc.

I was initially angry and wanted them caught, and obviously phoned the police who turned up fairly quickly and interviewed the driver and took the belongings, but as the day wears on I wonder what life must be like at home to make it worth stowing away in the back of a lorry with no idea of what you’ll be met with at the other end (probably a free house and regular benefit payments).

Anyway that is all – just a bit surprised at my own thoughts on it as I normally have strong views on such matters…

That is the problem, in most cases life is hard but no different to the past generations, its the fact they know what they will get for free if they claim asylum in this country. If we actually made it harder for them then we wouldnt seem like such a attractive destination

Don't be misled by what's printed in the Daily Mail etc - life for asylum seekers in the UK is pretty tough. To really teach them a lesson, many get sent to Glasgow.

Probably, if that truck driver in 2000 is anything to go by. A £12,000 fine for turning the illegals in himself.

Can someone point out to me where the incentive is for the driver to report the illegal stowaways? I must have missed that part.

If I were a driver and that happened to me, I'd be staying schtum.

They can't integrate while their application is under consideration as they can't really do anything.

I was just thinking that too, it's obviously meant as a deterrent to stop drivers receiving money for transporting stowaways, but I can't help thinking it's slightly counterproductive.

Someone I know is a lorry driver and he was tellling me a couple of weeks ago that the last time he parked up in Calais overnight he could hear them climbing into the trailer.
He said he left them in there and didn't say anything as he was off to Germany.

If the driver can show that the trailer was security sealed an unopened by him, then surely he can't be guilty of smuggling them in? No case to answer as far as he's concerned.
