Socialising with colleagues
Discussion
Yes - job is very social, and networking orientated.
Only socialise with colleagues/work peers during the week though, and there is no crossover between "work friends" and "home friends", except in a couple of very special circumstances (usually involving some sort of indiscretion of other).

I used to a lot, until it went horribly wrong.
Since leaving that place I make a point not to socialise with work colleagues.
care to elaborate?Since leaving that place I make a point not to socialise with work colleagues.

if you are asking a whole world of strangers if its a 'good idea'... but last time 'it went horribly wrong'.. then you have to tell what 'went horribly wrong' before we could possibly help you.

My take on it - if you like them and/or it is important to your job (networking?) then go, but there is no obligation to socialise with colleagues.

Although it can sometimes feel like there is, if you don't go on company nights out you get called a miserable b
d.I've moved around quite a lot & usually only socialise as I feel it is required on some occasions. I have rarely had, what I'd call, a good night in the company of colleagues (although I've had plenty of regrets when I have been out).
I try to never mix personal / work life. (except for an odd occasion)
I've been working for 14years and do not currently have anyone in my social circle with whom I've worked with.

Informal connections in a formal environment are more important than you may think (for getting things done AND your career)....I used to think "keep them separate" but now I'm older and wiser I know better!
PS This does not mean you need to sh*g everything that moves in the office.
PPS But that could be fun, depends on your office really
