Im going to be working in Newcastle for about a year and have a fairly decent budget for somewhere to stay:

Will consider

hotels
serviced apartments
apartments
houses to let
Holiday cottages / villas
country pub hotels

At the moment i think my favourite would be a serviced apartment or nice country pub somewhere.

First few weeks i'll probably be staying around Whitley Bay before I decide where i want to stay, but long term i want to be within easy reach of the football ground. I ont mind a 10 - 15 min drive though if its not through bad traffic and end up in the country side.

Out on the coast is nice, and you can obviously just catch the metro into town. As mentioned above, Jesmond is pretty popular, in particular Osborne Road (I think).
If you've got a decent budget I'd of thought you could get a rather nice pad in the city centre or Quayside...however just consider how noisy it'll be of a weekend and at night.

I've lived all over the North East and you can pretty much get whatever you want here if your budget is generous. Top whack rent in this part of the world is probably around £900-£1000 a month so you'll find plenty of choice.

Depends what you want really, most serviced apartments will be city centre/quayside area and although modern and functional you may find it noisy at certain times, especially on summer evenings when the nighlife scene is in full swing. Jesmond/Gosforth both nice areas with some decent properties but the former is studentville with the usual finish-at-7am parties that students like to have. If you end up living next to students your life could be hell. Be careful.

There are decent bits to Whitley Bay and Tynemouth is lovely if you want to live by the sea, or inland there's fab countryside northwards and westwards in Northumberland. Morpeth, Corbridge, Hexham and most places in between are all good. Avoid the mining villages of Co. Durham in the main but Durham city itself is very pleasant as are the towns and villages down towards Weardale but are too far out for you probably.

I live in a converted barn near Beamish which is quiet yet dead handy for the A1 and is only a 10 minute drive from anything you'd need. In fact, two of the barns on my development are still available for rent. PM me if you need any more info.

I'd avoid Jesmond area personally - it's mostly filled with students, prices are higher than other area's, you have to pay for parking and Osbourne Road is a street filled with bars hence the area can be noisy.

If you're wanting to stay local to Newcastle itself, I'd be looking at some areas of Gosforth or more likely St. Peter's Basin / the quayside (St Ann's Quay etc). There is a nice development on the Gateshead side of the river which is advertised ~£200 a week for single bed apartments...

You could always look at renting a room in an existing house though - plenty of professional shares around which tend to be cheaper...

Try http://newcastle.gumtree.com - it's quite a popular site for advertising rent up here.
