iPhone restore weirdness/ballache

FFS, I'm ready to throw this marvellous gadget out the fricking window!
So... got the phone this week with my new job, marvellous. Have installed loads of apps. Configured settings. Used wifi at home. Have synched it to work email and gmail. Set passcode. All is good.
So... the iPhone is locking every 5 minutes and putting the passcode is becoming a ballache. So I go to the settings in order to remove the automatic passcode locking. As I recall I slide the bar thingy to switch passcode off - then it asks me for my code. The first alarm bell rings as it brings up the full keyboard, not the numerical keypad (my passcode was a 4 digit number).
So... I switch it to the numbers screen and enter my four digit passcode and get an error msg. WTF?
I try once more but no joy so I stop as I don't want to brick it.
Now, I've synched this phone with work and personal laptop.
So now I'm at home on personal laptop trying to restore the fecking thing - but each time it restores it's still asking for a passcode in full keyboard format (not numerical)
Any ideas?!

Just turned mine on, then off again - no problems.
When you activate the passcode, you have to put in the code twice, then you get the screen to set a couple of options.
When you put the phone to sleep, then go to use it, you get shown the standard slide button, upon which after sliding it across, you get the keypad, with emergency call bottom left, and delete bottom right - either side of the 0 button.
Enter your code, and the phone is then accessible, and if you deactivate the passcode option, you'll need to re-enter your code one final time.
If none of this is helpful or what you see, then (assuming there's no difference between a 2G and 3G/3GS display) it'd be worth sync'ing, before using the restore function.
