I have been offered (very cheap) a 1988 E30 325i Touring, Green with Black leather with a switchable Auto box that is knackered (the box is fooked) but otherwise the car is fine and in decent nic.

Anyway:

1) Will this car have an LSD? Is there any way to tell without seeing the car up close?

2) I have a spare manual box in my garage, I know I will need a clutch but how much of a pain in the arse will the conversion be? I will need to source and fit a pedal box and master cylinder, are these rare/expensive and are they bolt in items?

Thing is I'm looking for a car for a banger rally but also considering getting this (if it has an LSD) to sell with my E30 track car as a spares package and sell the leather seperatly.

Any advice welcome.

I may be wrong but only IS (depends for 318is) and sport models on the 325 came with LSDs.

Jack it up and spin the wheel to see if the LSD is present.

If you crawl under the car you can check the tag attached to the diff. It might be a bit rusty! Use a torch. If it's an LSD it will have an S stamped before the diff ration. So it'll say S 3.91 or 3.74 or whatever (or 4.15 etc etc).

Or you can look at the original build sheet (if it's present) or get the VIN number (front scuttle) and go to a BMW main dealer and they'll print off the original build and spec sheet for your car.

Good luck fella.

Leather? Sport? bolsters in good nick? rear headrests? £400-450 imo.

Comfort isn't so desirable.

Motorsport? Name your price.

Can I reiterate 'without seeing the car up close....'

Probably not got an LSD then, I think it's gonna be a pain in the ass then.

LSD was not standard fit on any Touring models, and looking at the spec of that car, leather, auto box I would be very suprised if the 1st owner ticked the LSD box on the options list..... but you never know.

Can you not get the VIN from the 'seller'?

The other question of course will be if it does have a LSD does it still work.

Just get a nice 4.1 LSD from a 325iX - she'll fly then!

Plus, of course, any LSD that was fitted as new may not still be on the car !

I could ask but I don't want to give away that the car might be worth some money....

I think I'll leave as I don't have to time to be cocking about retrofitting pedal boxes and the like.

I'm pretty sure the manual Tourings were normally on a 3.91 rear - not sure about autos though. As E30M3SE says the LSD was an option
