The Institute for Fiscal Studies compiled a report that said Gordon Brown has imposed 157 'stealth tax' rises since 1997.

I’ve often wondered what someone is really left with, or what the actual rate of tax is for someone in real terms after tax allowances for a range of earners taking into account –
PAYE
NI
VAT
Fuel Duty
Council Tax
Fuel Tax (utilities)
Car Tax
Insurance Tax
Tax on Savings & Investments
Airport Tax
TV license
There’s probably double/triple this list in day-to-day taxes, but anyone on here have the time to work it out for these annual earning thresholds –
£25k
£50k
£75k
£100k
£135k (new budget)
£150k
£200k (with 50% top rate)
£250k
Perhaps 2 cars(10k miles p/a x 2), 2 holidays, 2 kids, £150 p/w shopping being the average?
What percentage are we left with after tax? (not including house purchase, death, pensions & inheritance which are not encountered day-to-day).
Eric, where are you...?

Eric, where are you...?That little?
Salary = £100k
Minus £5k allowance
= £95k
Minus an av. of 45% inc of varying tax bands + NI
= £52,250
This guy buys a car which is £40k inc. £7k vat
The £7k is 13.5% of his real income/earnings not 7% of his actual salary as this is an imaginary figure – he never sees it.
So with one purchase this guy is paying 13.5% tax on his already taxed earnings and he’s yet to pay car tax, have dinner at a restaurant, watch TV, have a beer, smoke or go shopping etc.
Last year I spent £21k with Tesco’s on shopping and fuel – it doesn’t take big individual purchases to exponentially increase the tax percentage you pay.
These figures are definitely wrong, hence the question, who here can calculate what we actually pay in tax after standard purchasing behaviour?
I think we’ll be shocked.
