Having just signed up to an Alfa forum, using V-bulleting. It has a great feature. If you hold your mouse over the thread title, the first 8 lines appears in a little yellow box, so you can decide if the thread is worth viewing before you click on it!

...and massively increases the server time and bandwidth to deliver the thread list page!

This is correct. It's very unlikely that the info is pulled up in real time. It's more likely to be built into the page so that when you hover it comes up.

Interesting idea though. I'll run it through the grey cells.

And it's not 'Teddy', Pwiggy...

Click View... Source on that page. You will see that the 8-lines of title for each thread is present in that page. When the server calls data up from the database, that info is streamed into the HTML. This means the server takes longer to generate the HTML for the page, and the HTML filesize is bigger hence more bandwidth.

The Alfa site has just under 3,000 members - PH has over 30,000 so the traffic requirements for PH are vast in comparison. Believe me, Gbs per month of data transfer are not cheap!
