Has anyone fitted a trans cooler to their gearbox? -- this has been one thing i havent seen on too many ultimas, well, none in fact. Think it would help out the reliability in high HP/TQ applications?

Radiator for gearbox is on right side. Oil goes from gearbox, to filter, to radiator, to pump, then back to gearbox spray bar plenum.
Pump is cockpit controlled by monitoring gearbox temp gauge.

Jack,

How do you find the pump? Does it seem to be operating much of the time once everything has warmed up or does it just come into play when you've been pushing a bit on track?

I must admit I'll be interested to find out how my painted G50 does for temperature. It looks pretty but does it break the cooling...

Dave
I turn the pump on manually, which is the only way it can be operated, if I see the gearbox temp. high. Actually, at this point in time, I've never seen the temp go above 160'F., and have only put the pump on to see how much, and how long it takes to cool the fluid, which in my case is a gallon. The 20 minute sessions that I've had the car on the track has not been long enough to get the temps much higher, and cruising with the ambient temps in the 80's, I've not seen the temps above 150', and that's with the cooling system off. I believe with the Ultima setup, the G50 gets better normal cooling than being installed in the Porsche.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the info.

You're right about the extra cooling in an Ultima. I guess it has pretty good airflow on all four sides in our cars compared with being stuck up in the engine bay with only really the underside in a Porsche.

Dave.
From the times I've been in Scotland, I could have used a gearbox warmer,... and that was in the Summer!!

Yes, I fitted a cooler a couple of years ago! It feeds the main cluster and the crownwheel after contact. I'm pleased with the result and it gives you that element of re-assurance?
