I have had both, i can recommend the 2.0, just that bit extra power really helps. Also, go for the Veloce spec, for the little extra bits that you get, hope that helps
In terms of budget, i have a 2002 veloce 2.0 with leather, 30k miles, iam looking to sell & will be expecting 9k for it

good to see i get replies. But apart from one which wasnt completely objective no opinions.

btw to all 156 drivers is the experience still as good as when alfa produced boxer engines. First car I had was a 33 , unfortunately only the 1.3 and not the quadrifoglio , but nevermind engine size great fun driving it through Germany at 120 mph.

Yes.
(Allowing for how heavy the cars are now with all the airbags and tra-la-la we "have to have" now).

The 2.0 is preferable as it is a bit punchier, a bit more flexible, and a bit smoother with having balancer shafts. But if you find a good car with a 1.8, it would be preferable to a doggy one with a 2.0.

Test drive a few and see if you really need the 2l. My preference is the 1.8 because its I believe it is smoother and doesn't have the balancer shafts (which can cause problems albeit rarely). The smaller unit appears to be more reliable (though I have no idea what percentage of 2 litre units go bang). Anyway, the 1.8 can be chipped to give 2 litre performance across the rev range. Buy wisely and go for condition and history before engine size and age.
