According to this week's autocar, BMW can't cope with demand with regards to leather. I've got a MINI cooper S with half leather and no matter how careful I am getting in/out of the car, it's already scuffed.
I would go as far as saying that I'd rather have a car without leather. It creases easily, certainly scracthes easily, fades etc... (and the usual argument of too hot in summer and too cold in winter is true too imo)
Cloth is far tougher for everyday life- in black can hide stains too. Why bother with leather? It smells good that's it.

i couldn't care less either.

golf has black cloth and looks ok after 8 years.

explorer has leather and looks like a grannys face. and its cracked and gone hard in places.. and you stick to it, and it gets fking hot in the heat.

It gets scuffed, is f'king hot in summer and f'king cold in winter. I'm quite happy with cloth.

The only benefit with leather is that it's wipe clean wink

I prefer cloth. It's more comfortable in extreme temperatures and it should be just as hard wearing if it's decent quality.

BMW must be using cheap leather then. My Omega is 10 years old with 130k on the clock and it still looks as good as new. No scratches or scuffs and anything that gets on it just wipes off.

Car is regularly used to transport kids and regular trips to the dump so I am impressed with the durability. Heated seat in winter keep it comfy, never found hot seats a problem in the summer, maybe due to them being light tan in colour ?

I would probably like cloth a bit more if people just fitted plain black cloth. I absolutely hate cloth with a pattern on it or in a horrible grey colour.

+1 on not liking leather. My Civic Type R seats were my favourite, red cloth mainly, with black alcantara bolsters and detailing. Stayed looking new throughout my ownership. Leather is horrible in too hot or too cold weather.

But somehow in cars like RR's, BMW 7series and "luxury" saloons alike cloth looks out of place

I think my ZR has the perfect mix, leather bolsters/sides and cloth. Albeit cheap (or fake) leather it's a good balance between looks and durability.

I don't like leather. Had it on two of my cars now and it was too hot or cold when first sitting down, and no matter what the outside temperature was I always ended the journey feeling uncomfortably hot at the contact points. Also I can't say I have too much of a problem keeping cloth clean - what do people do in cars that's so messy anyway?

I much prefer Alacantra, even though it doesn;t wear very well. Leather is wrong in a performance orientated car - you slide around on it too much.

The only complaints I have about leather seats is that when it's cold outside, the seats will be cold when you first sit on them; they also get hot.

But they are so comfy to sit in! Best of all though, the smell, the wonderful leather smell.

Leather is easier to clean too and will be worth more to the value of the car.

If you look at vintage Rolls they have leather up front for the driver but the owner sat on cloth in the back.

Alan Clarke had Bentley trim his car in cloth rather than the common leather.

Depends on the car. I had a 306 Rallye and a GTI-6, the seats in the Rallye were much better and more comfy. The cheap leather in the six was a bit nasty while a good fabric seat breaths nicely.

On a luxo barge leather is nice, that said, I sat in an XJC once with velour, which was absolutely fabulous

I don't care either way. If a nice car comes leather only, that'll be how it is. If they set rules like it has to be in leather to have elec/heated/memory seats or what-not, then it will have to be leather. But in general cloth is pretty nice.

Heated and cooled leather smile

I have leather in both the cars, one you can't even buy without, the other is quite nice and as has been said wipe clean etc.

Have herringbone wool in the Jag! A poverty spec option when new but looks much better than all of the worn bolster leather interiors around now.

I prefer cloth, in fact my favourite would probabaly be alcantara suede type BUT I would only buy a car with a prestigous brand if it had leather as I bought an alfa GT without leather and it was a real pain in the arse to re-sell as everybody seemed to want leather...i think its a status thing as most people dont like living with it on a daily basis.
