Simply put, he tried to expense the bill, employer (stock broker) at the time refused to pay and told him to pay it himself. He was miffed (had been entertaining some valuable clients), so he put the word about that he'd been screwed.
Long story short, a more enlightened company offered him a job and picked up the lapping tab.
