Yesterday my monitor started blacking out the bottom 1/3rd of the screen.

I've found that if I just tap the blacked out area then it disappears. It happens every 20 mins or so, but today it's getting harder to make it go away, I have to tap it a lot of times for it to disappear?

Any idea on how to fix this? Or is it likely to keep on getting worse?

Apologies for really dark photo! -

its dead jim. smile under warranty ?

quick google found this for a tv with half screen black

"I've not worked on this specific model, but what you have is vertical output failure and with it being intermittent - and fixed with a smack - a simple solution may be just reseating the vertical circuit board and any wire harnesses that might be jumpered to them The eventual heat build up causes them to expand, and break contact. I believe your vertical circuit board will be near the area where you find the hitting is most successful. Most snap in (sometimes screws are there for mechanical securing) and taking them out and reinserting will probably resolve this. Also, the same for any wiring harnesses with connectors. Be careful! Even with the TV unplugged, there are high voltages that remain for a long time in the unit

Thanks lestag, unfortuantly it isn't under warranty. I think it's about 5 years old now!

I had a quick google before posting but couldn't really find anyone else having similar problems, there were a few about TV screens doing it. But wouldn't that be different as TV screens aren't TFT?

It'll be so annoying if I have to get a new one as I'd want to replace it with exactly the same one, it does everything I need and I personally don't really like widescreen monitors.

it is a faulty, dry joint somewhere, as you press and it goes away. You could pull the back of (unplugged of course) and have a poke around

tft is used in LCD TC screens
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD , but im no expert

look on ebay for a 2nd hand one

you can still get std screens from dell and alike http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/category.aspx...

I gave it a fairly vigorous poke this morning and it hasn't done it since!

If it does break I'll just try and source a matching 2nd hand one like you said.

If I took the back and had a look around then, with my technical skills, it would likely just break it completely.

Thanks again lestag
