The maps on my Garmin nuvi are out of date but they want £60 or £70 to update so thought I may as well use the iPhone instead. I have the TomTom cradle which boosts the satellite signal.
Is TomTom app okay or are there better alternatives? I know it's popular, but is it any good?
iGo? Navigon? Other?

I got a Garmin 255 as a Christmas present from my employer. It uses Navteq maps as does my Nokia 5800. As the maps were free on the phone but not the Garmin could I copy them over?
Then Nokia added the satnav facility for free on the phone and modified the maps so they use vector graphics rather than bitmap. Si copying was no longer a possibility.
If you have an iPhone read the article Can the £26 CoPilot navigation app topple TomTom?

Have used TomTom on a WinMo devices for years, but I do rather like CoPilot on the iPhone. It does some annoying things, but the maps seem up to date.
The major pain I find with the iPhone is getting a call whilst driving, and despite a 5 year old HTC TYTN being able to do the "use the phone and show me directions at the same time" thing perfectly happily, the iPhone can't. Which is a bit crap.

Shocking as it may seem HTC has always been ahead of Apple when it comes to phones, The major pain I find with the iPhone is getting a call whilst driving, and despite a 5 year old HTC TYTN being able to do the "use the phone and show me directions at the same time" thing perfectly happily, the iPhone can't. I have a samsung omnia II now but am still using my HTC touch with tomtom as my main satnav.
I dont have one for my iPhone as I dont really need it (the car has it all built in). But I have heard good things about the TomTom one and I have had older TomTom software many years ago and it was good then. Its got better over the years and got to be one of the best around.
Biggest issue for me with the iPhone is the lack of multi-tasking though. If the phone goes then the app closes (well not quite but you get the idea). Then its back to the app later and hope that GPS signal is quick to lock and that the routing is OK. Given the price, look for a discounted separate unit I guess - I see that the later ones are less than a hundred quid now and even ones that are a bit older are now around 75 quid - not expensive for a dedicated unit.
