I'm after a new pair of HDDs for my Qnap TS-209. I'd like to cram a pair of 2TB drives in there as RAID1 redundancy set-up, but I'm not sure which drives to put in.

I like the look (by look I mean cost) of the 2TB Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 but I'm not sure if they are actually any good?

I'm going to use the NAS as the server for a media client and point of back-up for photos etc etc so it's not going to be under that much stress, but they will be on 24/7 so low power consumption would be a plus.

Any thoughts?

probably best to ask around in the qnap forums,

but in the meantime, this might help.

Thanks for that, just had a look around and it seems the one I've linked to is ok. There are some complaints about noise, but not about performance. So that should do the trick.

as an aside, are you migrating data onto the new disks, or going for a fresh install..?
My 500Gb disks are full now, and I'd like to upgrade, but I'm not sure there is an 'easy' way without loosing my data !

Yeah, that's my next question!

I should have enough storage to split up the folders from the NAS to the other PCs around the house, but I'm not sure what to do from there.

I'm going to read up on that next, I can't seem to find a guide to doing that sort of thing.

Prefer the Samsung drives myself - very quiet in operation.

Out of interest what are you using them in?

They are nice, but I don't need the speed and would prefer more storage

Sammy in an old ATA5 only (won't read >128GB drives!) FireWire drive that's been used as my standard iTunes depository, and peer-peer stuff for over 5 years.
Has been on and off, partitioned, moved about, left on for months, all without a single hiccup as far as the drive is concerned, which is only 80GB.
As much as their TV's are so-so, their drives really are an unsung hero in the grand scheme of things.
Their USB only (unfortunately) Story drive looks well, and has a functional on/off/LED knob on the front, at a time when all others are plain fronted, with the on/off switch at the rear, and just the regular plastic rocker type.

Will be looking at their SATA ones in the very near future to go with the planned dual bay FireWire800, etc RAID unit I'm looking at.
So for your situation with a NAS on more often than off, other than HDD spin down, I'd confidently offer the Samsungs as a viable alternative to the typical Seagates, Hitachis, and Western Digitals.
