I saw a strange police/army convoy on the motorway yesterday.

M6 southbound, near Carlisle. Midday.

First, a marked up Police Glaxay, travelling in lane 2 at about 65-70. Blue lights on to rear.

Then another one, this time in lane 1.

Then a strange Police van. A bit like a prisioner van crossed with a riot van, but larger (7.5t?). In full Police markings, but the base colour of the van was black not white. Again, blue lights on.

After that, we had another van which looked the same as the Police van, but unmarked, army green and no blue lights.

Then two traffic-type Volvos.

Finally, an army-type HGV breakdown truck (was this because if one of the vans broken down, they would want to continue the journey asap without waiting for recovery?)

Any ideas what it was?

Nuclear weapons. On route from Faslane to Aldermaston. Armed police plus Royal Marine escort.

I don't know. I assume prisoner transfer. Perhaps some sort of exercise.
There was one on the M23/M25 on Wednesday, taking up all three lanes.
One plain white van (driven by coppers), and initially three, but later five police cars.

I briefly saw something matching that riot/prisoner van description in the city of london thursday last, bank area, lit up and making haste.

not as impressive as the queens (?) touring party though, her rolls being accompanied by at least 8 bikes, couple of liveried rangies, couple of liveried galaxy-size people carriers and about 6 unmarked blacked out vito busses.

+1

Although not the full nuclear convoy as this is in the region of 30 vehicles

No there would have been at least 3 x 44 tonners in a convoy for that.

Seen a similiar convoy on the A34 complete with Bio Hazzard markings.
Armed officers in each vehicle.

at Hairy Ben

I saw that about two weeks ago, got stuck in traffic on Constitution Hill (BiB outside Buckingham Palace had stopped the traffic), did a U turn just as the whole entourage wafted by. Pretty impressive actually, I think it might have been the SA diplomatic visit or something.

Hope they all have have the safety on and the gun pointed down.

EDA since the police training incident inquest this week...

Feeling a lot less safe since the highly trained officer admitted this week that the gun 'just went off' during the exercise, that he knew was a practice run, when everyone else was firing blanks and that he didn't really know what happened.

I know someone died and that's awful, but they're allowed firearms because they're much better trained and have a more suitable aptitude than us.

His account of the f*ckup (as reported by the media) frightened me to death.

Saw one of the royals race by in a slightly lighter convoy last year, I was at a junction onto the road they came past on. Truly impressive, mainly the police bikes working in their formations at each possible junction etc...

Same goes for the police bikes with the hearses heading from wotton bassett to the John Radcliffe in Oxford on the A420, though at a slightly slower pace, and I would much rather I didn't see it so often...

/pedant mode on
Actually Coulport (about 8 miles from Faslane) to AWE Burghfield
/pedant mode off

The convoy make-up doesn't sound right for Trident warheads. AFAIK such movements always include a fire tender.
Could be SNM going to AWE Aldermaston.
