South Africa - good place to buy?

Going to Joburg for work in a few weeks.
Are there any interesting deals to be had down there?

No idea how it is currently, but Cape Town last December didn't look particularly good value.

You'd be better off not going to South Africa at all. Afghanistan is probably a safer bet - although you're unlikely to get any decent watches there.

On a more serious note, you're honestly unlikely to find any real bargains out there. Last time I was out there, any electronics were more expensive than here. Food and drink, on the other hand, are cheap as... well, chips.

Duty on imported goods is horrendous. I would say luxury imported goods are at least twice as expensive as they are here...have no idea if it is possible to claim it back like it is in the UK.

Few deals to be had here at all, bar perhaps wine and meat - can't really take the latter back with you though.

Our wonderful businesses have a free hand at rogering the consumer ;-)
