iphone and bluetooth

Hi all,
SWMBO has a new cooper convertible (which she loves!) and has recently got herself a new iphone 3gs.
The phone has paired with the car very easily and all functions seem to work except the volume playback of calls through the car speakers is very quiet. She tells me that the volume buttons on the steering wheel doesnt make any difference.
Has anybody else had this problem or have any ideas.
