Al Holbert world speed record (video)
Discussion
Hi guys, it's the Dog here again, and I don't want my enthusiasm for the 928 or 944 series to wear too thin on you fellows. Neinmeister and Domster, included, but here's a very cool video of Al Holbert running a stock 1987 928 on the salt flats at Bonneville. I thought even you air cooled (er oil cooled) guys would appreciate seeing this.
As he gets done with a 170-mph + speed run on the salt flats, he calmly gets out of the car as if he's just taken a nap. Had this been me, I think I would have fallen out the door and needed medical assistance, ha ha. But of course, I didn't win LeMans twice either!
Probably not dial up friendly, but pretty good streaming video if you're on a fast connection.

Dear Dog. A very impressive clip but one that has dated over the years. Perhaps you should take time to look at this forum at the end of March when some of the Porsche people (and others) on his forum will be achieving significantly higher speeds (at Bruntingthorpe) over a shorter distance. I doubt they will taking a nap but they will be very relaxed as the British are in these occasions.

Dog,
Several times this year, Bruntingthorpe will bare witness to much hooning around.
Many Porsches will max out -190mph being achievable by those with cars that can do it.
Oh, I do hope to make it at least one event this year.

lets hope someone videos it and posts some wmv's to share...
Yikes, you're a better man than I, and in the wet??? Sheesh
Yes, I know there are faster cars out there today, that's why I noted that I hoped I did't wear too thin on everyone due to my unbridled enthusiasm for the older cars. I'm just excited about this "historic find" which, as you now know, was produced by Porsche.
I've seen Al Holbert run back when he was racing SCCA and IMSA series in the US. Quite a contender in any car, but wicked in a Porsche of any kind.

Bear in mind that the run in dog's video was done in 1986...!
Also, I wonder how many mph were added by taking the door mirrors off...? 3mph...? 6mph...? 10mph...? One minute they are there, then they're gone. Then they're back etc...!
Very observant

I wonder if it still counts then as surely for the car to be road legal and an unmodified production cr it would have to have the mirrors (at least drivers side) on? Still a VERY impressive speed for a 14yr old car!
