McPheason Strut Spring assem

Hi all, a quick question, most struts come attached to an upright/hub/disc assem, is it possible to use the bottom wishbone (in this case) and source a shorter strut/spring assem, as long as the strut top was mounted in the same line relative to the old mounting point? I am just trying to squeeze an assembly where it currently won`t fit, other option would be to fabricate a top wishbone and use conventional practises, any ideas? It`s a Porsche boxster S strut assem if that helps.
