help needed, need to take an oval section from a jpeg ?
Discussion
making a service card and need an oval image on the front from a jpeg any ideas how i can do this. i have oval framed an image but when this gets imported it creates a white box around oval shape, as this is going on top of another image this does not work. Hard to explain but basically i have a large image that forms a background and want to put an oval image in the middle of it without a white square around the oval any ideas ?
If you are trying to import the oval cut out as a separate image, unless you have saved it as a GIF, which supports transparency, a JPG will always have the white surround.
The way I would do it is open your background picture as your base layer. Then open your second image and drag it on top of your background image. Make your oveal selection. You can then either:
Invert selection and then select cut - this will remove the excess and leave your oval sitting on top of your background.
or
Make a new layer via cut or copy, and delete the layer from which you have made the selection.
ETA: Have just read your last post, so my suggestions won't work if you haven't got software that does layers.
If you can save your images as GIFs rather than JPGs, you should be able to import your oval selection without the white border.

I think (from memory) you can do it with a JPG if you duplicate the background, then delete the original layer. Select the ellipse you want, delete/erase the exterior and you should see a grey/white checkerboard appear outside the ellipse - this is PS-speak for 'transparent'. Then copy/paste this image over the one you want.
NB Aren't GIFs only 256 colours? Or has that changed?

GIF has always had the capability to contain 24 bit image data. Not the best choice for 24 bit images due to the LZW compression (or no compression in the case of ANGIF),
