The car's sat for 2 years. I've FINALLY got the last part I need to fire it up... big bore exhaust gaskets. smile I wanna go for a spin! Is there anything I can do to re-lubricate the engine short of turning it over with the ignition coil disconnected? I think I read something once about turning the oil pump over with a drill? (maybe I read that on another forum for another car)

Mike: The drill trick is what we always used on our Yank engines before first start and I would expect that your BUICK Rover engine would be the same. Nice to see that you are real close to being able to pop and bang the locals in your area.

You can buy (or some people make) something which drives the oil pump (assuming it's a pre-serp) once the distributor is removed - you'll see the type of arrangement you need to replicate once the distributor is out. You'll obviously need to re-set the timing afterwards though. If you're going to crank it up on the starter though you should also remove the fuel pump relay to avoid flooding the engine.

rather than remove the relay I just unplug the wire that goes from the AFM to the ignition module, which I believe controls the fuel pump. simples.

...take out your oil pump rotors and stuff full of petroluem jelly - pop back in the rotors and ensure everything is as full of petroleum jelly as possible.

If you go the priming with the drill business, remember to set the drill to the reverse position as the pump will only prime when running anti clockwise.

That's a right pain - and a waste of good vaseline ;^) squirt some oil down the middle hole of the remote oil thingy. Primes the pump in no time.

Has it really been two years?

I suppose it's closer to 18 months... which feels like 3 or 4 eternities!

Remote oil thingy? You mean the oil filter stand yeah?

Yeah, after reading o here about trouble people had I was a bit nervous of changing the oil for the first time (I'm a recent TVR / Wedge owner) and I used that method on mine, got oil pressure quite quickly so that's how I'll always do it now! It worked for me.

The hardest part is not spilling any!

Mike: The guy with the 280i has a very bad back and I don't think he is using his car anymore. I have asked him to go out for a short drive of his choice and he just keeps putting it off and I have decided to wait for his buddy who use to own that car to come out for a visit. The Griff is owned by one of the Hotchkiss kids (Calgary Flames) and I am still having a hard time getting him to feel comfortable with me but I understand as most people approaching somebody like him have another motive. The other 2500M owner is always busy with his catering company and he only gets out with his car mid week. So you know who that leaves........

We have been out with our cars though for a few runs. You didn't stop by at the World of Wheels.
